After the bizarre decision to keep this horse routing and add blinkers, which led to a flop in Northern California in his prior start, Declan's Moon ran 2nd at 4/1 odds in an ALW race today at Hollywood Park...at a sprint distance, with the blinkers off.

He raced in 2nd place the entire way around the track, as the top two finishers, both exiting races from Golden Gate, were a clear 1st and 2nd throughout the race, making up a $190.60 exacta.

What did the winner do previously that led to me putting him in my Virtual Stable at one point? I'm guessing he threw up a 90+ Beyer first out as a 2yo. Always fun when you get a Digest Notification to see the two horses you had in your Virtual Stable run 1-2 in a race that pays out $190 in the exacta.

About a year and a half ago, I put a horse in stablemail right after he debuted, when I was doing my trip notes for Calder...I saw that he was a Christope Clement debuter, and showed real uncommon raw speed for one of his debuters.

I looked up his pedigree---and almost fell over. It was as sensational as turf pedigree get--and it was all VERY hidden! The Tomlinson number wasn't much, the sire was underrated turf sire Holy Bull, and the dam was winless, and had only produced unraced foals.

But she was kin to English Derby winner Benny The Dip, the outstanding Turf horse Cryptic Rascal, as well as Wakia---who is the dam of LEGENDARY Japanese turf horse Silence Suzuka...arguably the most raw talented turf horse of all-time...and almost certainly the most underrated turf horse of my lifetime.

Anyway, I get a stablemail that he's running on the turf at KEE. His 2nd turf start--in his only other turf start he exited a 5.5 furlong dirt race, off about a six month layoff, and was beaten less than 5 lengths at 20/1, when having every reason in the world to be a short horse.

But naturally, I didn't even bother to download the form for KEE yesterday...I had other plans and was just sick of their meet. The horse won easily at 36/1 odds....I'll be on him next time out, when he's probably facing a much tougher field, and will likely be no greater than 9/1.

He broke his first time out by 6 as a 2yo back in May 2005. In his second start he ran in the Best Pal Stakes and finished 4th to the late What a Song. A year ago he won the Harry Henson Stakes at Hollywood going 5.5f on the green.

Thanks, he probably sat atop the 2yo leaderboard in May. I like to add those sort of horses to my Virtual Stable to see if they ever amount to anything.

I had the opposite, the Saratoga meet was kicking by butt last year so I decided I was just going to take the day off from betting and sit out in the picnic area and enjoy the beautiful day and relax. I then noticed that one of the horses in my Virtual Stable was running and going off at huge odds, a miserable failure Jump Start 2yo I added named Kon Krete Kid. So for the hell of it I throw $2 w/p/s on him. I then watch Giant Chieftain freak over a shadow in the stretch and take a detour to the grandstand to open things up for Kon Krete Kid to hit at the longest price of the meet. Needless to say that drew me back in to betting the rest of the card and I gave back most of the money I won on him. Sometimes I feel like this game knows when you are feeling most downtrodden and gives you just enough to get back up before it walks all over you again.

That was certainly one of the more memorable races of the entire meet. Giant Chieftan's antics were very amusing.

I think he also held up the start for several minutes in that race.

Here's a clip of Silence Suzuka's win in the '98 Kinko Sho. He destroyed the course record, and won by what might have been as many as 15 lengths. The 2nd place finisher Midnight Bet, was a Hong Kong Cup winner, and actually won this same race, the G2 Kinko Sho, the following year.

Certainly one of the all-time great performances. Silence Suzuka toyed with El Condor Pasa that year, handing him his only career loss in Japan. ECP won a group 1 in Europe, and just missed winning the Arc the year Montjeu and Daylami ran.

I actually was in the Men's room with Ron Ellis the other day @KEE. I did ask about Buzzard's Bay. He said he going on derby day @ Hollywood. But who knows he was as drunk as I.

So, during his 4-year-old season, they just let him run off to big leads in all his races, and he simply wouldn't stop.


He won six consecutive major stake races in a row as a 4-year-old, and was a heavy favorite in the '98 Emperor's Cup. He had a 15 length lead on the far turn of the race, and suffered a fatal breakdown right there.

I certainly wouldn't compare his popularity to the kind a Barbaro or a Ruffian had---but he was VERY popular, and it is considered one of the darkest days in the sports history over there.

I watched some of those races on Youtube, thanks for the link. Just watching him go was a real treat. This was no Shake the Bank that's for sure, not at age 4. So tragic to watch the breakdown. Compared to some I've seen it's not as graphic but you can tell it's a bad one. Was the relation to that horse you spoke of from an American branch that just never got sent to Japan or did someone send one back? I assumed the former since they're pretty good about holding onto horses over there right?

I watched them too, wasn't aware the horse was going to breakdown until I saw it. Terrible end to what looked like an unbelievable horse.

Silence Suzuka was out of a US-bred mare named Wakia, by Miswaki, a SW at Del Mar and a half-sister to Benny the Dip and Cryptic Rascal.
