Unhappy surgery

my husband has to have surgery on his foot. showed the x-rays to the ortho, said he has to go in and put a titanium plate in the shape of tonys heel into his foot. 10-12 weeks before he can put any weight on it. plate will be permanent. some compression, part of his heel is displaced, in about four pieces....his foot is HUGE right now, that's why they have to wait--a week from tuesday is when he plans to do it.

thanks kev! i'm bummed out, he is too....he doesn't like being out of commission so long, but man it could always be worse.
bobby said he sees a lot of these that are bi-lateral, at least tony can get around on crutches, can't imagine being laid up with two broken feet!
we're supposed to go out of town mid-july, have to see how the finances are tho--he's got short term, but it won't pay his full salary, but we'll make out ok.

lol
kids even offered to go to work! i told them thanks, but i didn't think it would be necessary. man, they're something else.

i have to drive him up to hot springs tomorrow, so they can do a ct scan of his foot--bob said they'll make a 3d model based on that so he can see everything clearly, know what the plan is going in.

i'll be a nervous wreck next tuesday.

A guy I work with had this exact injury about 5 months ago. Fell off the roof at work about a 15 foot fall. Fire Engine came and got him off the 2nd roof. He's back to walking and will back to work before the end of June. He's about 240 lbs and 6'3'' he's also 47 years old. Doctor said he's glad he didn't break his hip or pelvis in the fall. Tell your man that he'll be ok in the long run medicine has come a long way the last few years. Nothing against your looks but tell him to think about all of them young and sweet nurses he'll be around in re-hab. ha ha ha

Well, at least now you two know a bit more detail what you are facing That's tough. I'll be sending good thoughts your way.

Tell Tony that, after he recovers, he has to get that titanium heel through airport security, so he, too, can come with you and the kids to see Sumwon run

Nice kids. You and T. must have done something right

damn, six months...the doc yesterday said worst case, six months. we're hoping for half that--but then, he didn't fall that far either!

tony is in really good hands, bobby has been a surgeon for 27 or so years. best in the state, thank god he's a friend we could call!

thanks everyone for your well-wishes, we appreciate it a lot.

thanks pillow. thanks to all of you.

doc said the biggest deal is infection, so he'll be on antibiotics a few days before surgery, and then for however long after.

bob has his own ortho hospital in hot springs, he and two partners. tony will stay 48 hours after surgery and then come home.

make him take his time and don't rush back. please!
i had scar tissue cleaned from my achilles tendon.

doc said most people are 6 months, i tried to get through it in 4. i had a whole workout routine for 6 months before surgery and a rehab program for after surgery. everything worked well but 1 movement and i wasn't strong enough and it cost me! i was 12-18 months FULL recover, opposed to 6-12.

something you might want to look into is some water rehab, after the stitches come out. it will keep the strength in his legs without the pounding. your local YMCA might have a aqua-arobics class and i did a workout called aqua-jog. i loved both and wish i'd known about it 25 years ago when i was still running track!
good luck!!

Usually don't visit this room but glad I did. Glad he wasn't more hurt and is going to be taken care of. Both Barney and I said to each other on a return flight that those were some good kids you have.

Hopefully you'll be able to make your July trip and visit Arlington but if not there's always next year and we'll see you soon, either here or somewhere Sumwon chooses.

It may not seem like it now but the wait to let the swelling ablate is the key to success. Your ortho guy is wise as I see so many procedures that are rushed and never heal correctly.

Deb, my prayers are for you, your hubby and his recovery post procedure as I take nothing for granted in medicine. Hopefully you'll be blessed with a straightforward procedure and speedy recovery.

Good Luck...

i told tony he needed to follow the rules completely, so that he wouldn't take longer to heal. he doesn't want to be laid up any longer than necessary either.
i'll have to check into the water aerobics--no facility here, but i think there's a place about an hour from here he can go to.
i guess i could always take him out to the river and push him in!

joking!!

i'll be sure to tell kelly and eric, i appreciate it!

we still want to try to get up there, my oldest one is up there and we were going to see him too....just have to wait and see how things are, what we're looking at in terms of his ability to get around, and of course finances.
our medical is thru his job, and since it didn't happen at work, he'll be on a short term disability policy he has thru them...but still have to find out about health care and things like that, if we pay them out of his disability check. just trying to get a handle on what my budget will be.
