Two favorites scratched at the gate.

Favourites scratched from Caulfield Cup - Master O'Reilly wins 20 Oct 2007

By Rob Burnet

In a sensational 2007 Group I BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) the two favourites Maldivian and Eskimo Queen (NZ) were scratched at the barriers after injuring themselves.

The race, which started 10 minutes late, was by the Danny O’Brien trained Master O’Reilly with stable-mate Douro Valley second, and New Zealand trained Princess Coup third.

A full report on the race will be published shortly.

Hope he's okay... poor thing.

Did Eskimo Queen take lessons from Aqua?

Blood and toil as Master O'Reilly wins

October 20, 2007 FLEMINGTON trainer Danny O'Brien grabbed the quinella in a sensational Caulfield Cup today when Master O'Reilly wore down his stablemate Douro Valley for a gritty victory.

Racegoers were stunned before the race when Maldivian, who had been favourite for the feature for weeks, and second pick Eskimo Queen were shock late scratchings.

Eskimo Queen laid down in the gates and lashed out at Master O'Reilly who was boxed next to her.

Maldivian became stirred up by the commotion and reared, hitting his head on the gates.

He was led from the track with blood pouring from a neck wound.

Master O'Reilly was passed fit to start and the rest is history.

”It's a dream come true for me and my stable,'' O'Brien said.

”To get both of these horses here and see them do so well, I'm speechless.''

It was the second recent Group One win for jockey Vlad Duric who won the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on Bon Hoffa at Caulfield on September 22.

New Zealand mare Princess Coup was third in today's $2.5 million race.

He had plenty of run with the 50.5, and I think he was the winner all the way.

But that is easy to say with the two fancies scratching.

I might have been lucky, but that's racing.

That is three years in a row I have hit the Cup.

Railings two back, then I bought a used Daihatsu with the winnings off of Tawqeet last year while standing next to Richard Freedman while it ran.

And now Master O'Reilly gets home for me.

I'm gonna bet $1,000 next year on my horse. I apparently can't lose this race.

Thrilled by the run of the Princess, she'll love the 3200m and the longer straight.

She was flying the last bit. She did NZ proud.

Shock: Television Clamps Could Have Caused Maldivian's Injuries
The Caulfield Cup sensation relating to the late scratching of hot favourite Maldivian has taken an incredible twist this evening.

Stewards are to launch a full scale investigation into what caused a large gash down Maldivian's neck which led to the gelding being scratched.

Metal clamps used to broadcast television footage from the starting gates was found with traces of blood and could be to blame for Maldivian's injury.

It is understood the the microphone and transmitter belonged to the racing industry's official footage company Sportscolour.

Maldivian suffered a large gash starting just behind his offside ear and running for at least seven inches.

The Mark Kavanagh trained gelding was treated by veterinarians and ten stitches were required to mend the injury.

RVL chief steward Des Gleeson confirmed tonight that his panel would conduct a thorough investigation into the possibility that the transmitter and the associated clamps caused the injury that led to Maldivian's scratching.

Gleeson said he was unaware of the device being clamped to the gates - believed to be between the first and second stalls.

Oh and cheers to the Princess... forgot to say that.

Yeah, i didn't see the race but one of the lads who i was with today did and said about the gash on the horse's neck. He said it looked quite serious.

I hope everything turns out okay with Maldivian.

You can see the pre race incidents and the race here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3NLk2uOhwY

When they walk Maldavian back to the saddling area you can see the blood on his neck. You also can see the jock thrown backwards when the horse reared up the second time in the gate.

Apparently he'll be alright, needed 10 stitches and is out for the Spring but they're looking forward to an Autumn campaign with him.

Maybe Better May Be In Doubt
Story By Chris Scholtz

Sunday, 21 October 2007: The fallout from Saturday's dramatic Caulfield Cup continues with Maybe Better reported to be lame and in doubt for the remainder of the spring.

Maybe Better was found to be lame in the off foreleg and is to undergo treatment before trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith can determine his immediate program.

Mayfield-Smith said the gelding had soreness in a joint but is hoping the setback will have only a minimum impact on his Melbourne Cup preparation.

Maybe Better was third in last year's Melbourne Cup but failed to enhance his prospects for this year's race when he failed to finish off Saturday's Caulfield Cup as expected.

He finished ninth with his rider Corey Brown reporting that the gelding race dour and lacked a kick at the finish.

Caulfield Cup late scratching Eskimo Queen has stitches in a cheek and leg abrasions but her trainer Mike Moroney is hoping she will be fit to start in the $3 million Tattersalls W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday in a bid to get her program back on track for a Melbourne Cup start.

He is leaning to a Cox Plate start over the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday week as the lead-up she now needs before the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

Maldivian's trainer Mark Kavanagh has reiterated that the gelding would not race again this spring to give him time to recover from the trauma of the neck injury he suffered at Caulfield on Saturday.

A piece of television sound equipment attached to the barrier framework is believed to caused Maldivian's injury when he lunged upwards and cut his neck.

The device was found to have traces of blood and horse hair and is in the possession of the stewards.
