Derby tri, super & P4 payoffs
No, I didn't catch them, but once again it shows if one is willing to spread out a bit, they can catch a giant fish.
When I heard the tri payoff was a little over $1700, I just assumed it was a $2 ticket. That was the DOLLAR payoff. A 5-2 over a 13-1 over a 27-1. The favorite over a horse w/a 4 race winning streak with solid figs on anybodys scale over a once beaten horse who was against the bias last out and figured to be running at the end. I still thought DoC's big win at OP was pace aided but at 27-1, I could see how somebody could toss him into their tris. The $2 super came back at over $58K. Dutrow had reportedly told the USA Today he was going to bet $100K to win on Big Brown but when Costas was interviewing him, he said he decided against it. Rich, all you had to put up was $5,814 in dollar super tickets to buy the race out w/Big Brown on top. And that would've brought back over $29K. Pick 4s often can vary wildly from the parlay payoffs and CD's P4 on races 7-10 was no exception. This is a P4 which culminated in the Derby favorite winning, and the favorite (Einstein) winning the Woodford Reserve. OK, the first two legs weren't easy but both winners were under 15-1. You had Prado on Bayou's Lassie, a quality horse. I guess most figured she'd be in trouble with Dreaming of Anna in the race but DoA was coming off a slow pace wire job and now was drawn outside Bayou's Lassie. One thing is for sure, DoA was overbet at 7-5 and that caused value on others in the race. I'd be the first to admit I didn't have Intangaroo as a first time dirt runner but being by Orientate out of a Tasso mare, maybe her future should be on real dirt. She had beaten Hystericalady at 7f earlier this year and with the 4 way pace battle that ensued, its not surprising closers ran 1-2. So the $2 payoff for the 12-1 followed by 14-1 with a 2-1 and 5-2 rounding it out? Almost $15,000 for $2. Dutrow could've bought this $2 P4 out for just under $900. Maybe Sandy Goldfarb can give Rick some advise on how to "diversify". |

I missed the earlier thread.
The payoffs this year once again show that the Derby is the single greatest betting spectacle in this country. I don't know too many people who've gotten a 1000-1 return by betting the Super Bowl. |
