Default This Sucks... Could have been a Classic (Zaftig sidelined)

Zaftig, the impressive winner of the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes on June 7 at Belmont Park, will be forced to miss the Grade 1 Mother Goose on June 28 due to a bruised foot, trainer Jimmy Jerkens said Wednesday...

Definitely takes some luster off the race, but Proud Spell against Music Note should still be interesting..

Every year, the bar is lowered on what it takes to be considered "big time".

The Coaching Club American Oaks would have been terrible so at least now that one will have some star power. Plus if they both win it would setup a nice showdown in the Alabama.

With nearly every division being underwhelming, I'm glad that we have some legitimate three-year-old fillies.

Is that supposed to be an exasperated, world weary condemnation of the quality of the filly crew? Because if it is, I don't get it. Zaftig, Proud Spell and fillies like Ariege, Pure Clan, Indian Blessing, Little Belle, Ginger Brew, even Golden Doc and Lethal Heat, et al, aren't legitimate enough for you? To me it's been a great season for big time soph fillies.

Not to mention BSharpsonata, and of course Eight Belles... this is a deep division.

The NYB 3YO's are very solid this year as well.

No. It's supposed to be an exasperated, world weary condemnation of the entire breed.

Ok, OK...the 3YO filles have yet to disappoint as an entire division. I'll give you that. But calling a matchup between Proud Spell and the latest graded stakes winner "big time" seems hyperbolic to me.

I was really wanting to see Zaftig again.
Imo the horse had big upside. Wait. Patience.

Proud Spell has done nothing wrong in her entire career, and has a chance to accomplish big big things.

Agreed. And while I think the division has been solid at the top, I'm not terribly excited about seeing Proud Spell battle the likes of Little Belle and Bsharpsonata.

Now, if you can get Proud Spell, Zenyatta, and Ginger Punch on the same track at the same time, that would be something.
