I voted for Larry Colmus because I know and like him. I put Travis Stone second since he is a DTer.

I can't say I was looking forward to hear a 'Brit' call the races at CD this past week. However, I was very impressed with Mark J. His race call in the 12th race friday was great. A full field of 10-12 horses going 5f on the turf can be an announcers nightmare. MJ picked up alot of very important factors, along with a horse breaking down on the lead which leave alot of announcers shocked and speachless. He didnt miss a beat, i recommend watching the replay before anyone votes.

Default CD Guest Announcer Survey

Churchill Downs has Guest Announcer survey posted on its site. Here is link: http://www.keysurvey.com/survey/231127/1335/

Previously established CD email address for race caller feedback: announcer@kyderby.com

My personal lineup (first to worst) is:

1. Travis Stone -- up and coming star
2. Larry Collmus -- reliable, steady
3. Mark Johnson -- best foreign chap
4. Bobby Neuman -- Calder fixture
5. Michael Wrona -- worst foreign chap

I assume Johnson is not a U.S. citizen - would that be a factor at all?

I sure hope Bobby Neuman isn't a derbytrailer. I have a favorite it's the guy who called the Ouija Board/Alexander Goldrun race in the Goodwood race, just to be safe I don't have the heart to hurt anyone's feelings here.

calling a race is extremely difficult (to get right). These guys make it sound easy.

it's like poetry.

"with 3 furlongs to go

CIGAR!..."

I don't feel like I can vote because I haven't been listening to Churchill
I can't bet the races - I don't watch the races

so they can have whoever they want calling the races - it won't matter to the betting public.

Mike Batteglia is the greatest racecaller ever besides maybe Roger Houston.

The more the voting continues, the more interesting this thing is...

You have to expect that Wrona and Johnson "split" the vote of accent-appreciative fans. Neuman and Collmus have a similar, slightly innocuous and vanilla style that makes them blend in rather than stand out, and those two figured to split votes. That leaves Travis, who in his early 20's fits what you would think Churchill would want in terms of a stable, long-term voice. I said on "ATR" when this process began that assuming CDI could live with the spectre that Travis would want and aggressively seek the New York job when it becomes available, he was the 'smart' and logical choice..

If this is true (that the New York job is his dream job) with all respect to Travis then I would prefer that one of the other fellas get the job.

Well, as I was recently reminded, Tom Durkin isn't retiriing any time soon.

I believe if you asked the majority of announcers in this country including more than one of the candidates for the CD job what gig they most covet, they would answer that of NYRA. I'm certain that those feelings about calling in New York would never keep Travis or any other person from giving CD everything they have. After all, calling the Ky Derby for the largest crowd at any racetrack all year long is a pretty important job and will be treated with the proper respect.
