WOW

who makes these bold decisions? last year you couldn’t brink ANY alcohol into the grandstand, now you can't bring it in the infield, why go to the preakness? it sure as hell can't be to bet the undercard b/c it usually sucks. I didn't have any problem bringing vodka to my seats in the grandstand last year, security gave our cooler a once over and let us pass, so they're still ways around it, but that’s gonna cut their infield attendance in half, maybe more if college kids can't bring in trash cans full of beer, are they seriously trying to push people away from biggest/only event maryland has for horse racing?

-bt-
BT, I just got around to reading this, but really? The Preakness undercard is probably one of the three or four best quality race days on the year.

Anyway, I'm sure there is some merit to picking up the liquor business, but I'm frankly shocked there hasn't been a huge lawsuit at Pimlico to date over some of the happenings in the infield. MJC certainly can't afford that megamillion lawsuit at this point.
Yes. The Running of the Urinals just won't be the same without people getting crowned with full beer cans.

I for one think the infield at the Preakness borders on being a drunken prison riot after around 3pm. It has only become this way in the past 10 years or so - I used to go in the mid 80's-early 90's and while we all enjoyed more than our fair share of booze, it was still a festive atmosphere. It is absolutely fucl<ing disgusting nowadays. Good for the MJC.

it resembles that of a delaware park saturday card. its lower level claimers taking shot at allowances b/c of the bigger purses, and 14 horse fields. Their feature turf race is almost at the point of non esistance, the competition is getting weaker and weaker, the 3YO colt sprint (forgot the name) is usually pretty solid, but thats about it.
compared to the other undercards of the triple crown races its no wonder they want to move the preakness out of b-more. I know they're strapped for cash and all, but what other big days do that have to spend it on, DeFrancis Dash, Maryland Million?

"Softening the blow was the announcement that there will be several added entertainment elements, including a pro women's beach volleyball tournament and a concert featuring Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer ZZ Top, contemporary rockers Buckcherry and a local group yet to be announced."

there's gonna be soo much room in that infield they could have 8 women's beach v-ball games going on and its still gonna look empty. on the flip side $3.50 for a 16 oz is a pretty good price

Perhaps it's me, but I think they should have a virtual horseracing game instead of a NASCAR game. (maybe NASCAR threw some $ at them)

It usually one of the top three or four disappointing undercards of the year to me.

Preakness undercard would be good if they would combine fridays stakes with saturday's but since they did away with some of those that will never happen.

I always enjoy the Dixie, and the Sir Bart...er...Barbaro has had a few nice races over the years. The Friday card is always really nice as well. I guess when one is used to the average MJC card, those cards are pretty darn nice.

This is really a shame. I have been about 10 times and had fun everytime. The reason it has become an issue in the last 10 years is becasue more and more corporate tents in the infield. It is already a pretty small infield, but atleast 50% is consumed by corporate tents. So, they basically push 100K people into half an infield. Close quarters is just as much to blame as beer for trouble in the infield. Territory wars are a big problem. In contrast, the Derby infield is huge and has relatively few areas designated for tent and stands. You can find open grass to sit down all day long. No need to fight over a small piece.

MEC sucks my Maryland ass!

exactly.... like 4-5 years ago i was @ the belmont and they had the big 18 wheeler NTRA semi in the park. You could get on the truck and look at all these different cool horse racing features, the horse racing video game where you're physically on the horse. But the coolest thing was they had a section where they actually let you call a race, and it was broadcasted throughout the entire truck so all could hear. I was wasted and ended up getting the mass cap when skip away won, they gave me the pp's and let me go to work, i was so wasted i knew it sounded like sh!t but it was fun, and they gave you the "VHS" (thats the old school version of a DVD for those out there that don't know).

but i guess some sort of nascar ride would be more fitting or relavent @ a horse race and a nascar hot bed like b-more, what?
If liability is the issue, then why have alcohol in the infield beyond serving it in the marquis tents?

Let's say someone gets loaded by 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. on Preakness Day (no stretch there), then enters the infield and has more beer supplied by the MJC.

Isn't that person just as likely to do the "running of the urinals" as someone who gets loaded on his own beer?

And what will stop some moron loaded on MJC beer from taking, let's say, his 10th beer, half-drank, and throwing it at the guy running atop the urinals?
Draft beer

and, I have to believe there is a huge difference in consumption when you are paying $6.00 a draft vs bringing in a case for $12.00.

I really can't believe I'm posting against carrying in booze...wow

Have you guys actually been near the proletariat entrances of Pimlico on Preakness day? Fools literally bring in case upon case of beer (my favorite part is actually the guys with shopping carts willing to cart your load for a $20 - this stuff is good enough for the Wire), I suspect about 75 percent of which is to drink whilst 25 percent is to throw at your closest neighbor.

I, for one, happen to enjoy those corporate tents at Preakness. The difference between Pimlico and Churchill is that Churchill has other days to make revenue and an actual non-degenerate local audience, while Pimlico either makes money on Preakness day or they don't make money period. I can't begrudge the Jockey Club the opportunity to make some extra cash by selling corporate sponsorship on the infield if it keeps Maryland racing afloat.

what ateam said. people dont tailgate at the preakness... they bring there booze in at 8 am and party all day. I dont think attendence will be cut by 75k this year. but next year if they really eliminate alcohol it will be cut by at least 50k next year.

Kids didnt go there to watch horses... they go to party.

Maybe having to pay $5 for the one beer instead of $15 for one of the beers in the 24 pack will stop most people from throwing the beer....also it being in a plastic cup will be a tougher throw (acuracy and speed wise) then in a can.

Actually, I was considering getting infield tickets this year after sitting in the grandstand for about nine Preakni, since this might be the last opportunity that I have for a while to go. Two years ago, I went into the infield during the middle of the day, and went to the outer fence to watch the turf race (in which the horse fell right in front of us). It was a neat place to watch a race there, and you still had jumbotron access.

I'd like to see the "liability numbers" if that is the case, though.

Will Frank's Energy Drink be available in the infield?

I wonder if Lee Chang Ferrell will be in attendance this year to celebrate his 10th anniversary.
