* Penny Tweedy lost a coin toss to Odgen Phipps and got Secretariat.

* Gary Stevens originally said no when Lukas offered him the mount for Thunder Gulch, but then changed his mind when Mike Smith convinced him he should ride him.

* Jerry Bailey who almost didn't ride Sea Hero in the Derby but after a 4th place finish in his last prep saw fit enough to ride him in the race and suggested to Mack Miller that Sea Hero would be better without blinkers.

* That Chris Antley was one of the last choices to ride Charismatic after many riders were offered the mount on him 1st only to say no.

Got all these interesting tidbits from a book called "2 Mins to Glory" an interesting book that documents the history of derby winners. A cool read!
