To understand it's importance,it has to be taken in context. This organization has been pretty lost for 18 years.Sure,we made the playoffs 2 years ago,but barely got a hit against St. Louis. The player who carried us to the playoffs was impatient, and swung at poor pitches the whole series. Then, the organization wouldn't sign him,and it was a mess.He is a special person.A witch at 3rd base, and I know he still belongs here.He has done well at times in Seattle, but he loves L.A.,and he would hit the cover off the ball if he could play 81 a year at Dodger Stadium. So,that 2004 regular season was the one bright spot in 18 years. Then we have this 2006 up n' down season.Although we are contending for a playoff spot, there has been one very huge problem. We have been the door mat for the other team we are fighting the division for.I still don't like to put in writing our record this year against the Padres.Their reliever,Trevor Hoffman has treated us like his personal btch for God knows how many years, and 55 saves out of 57 chances. That is pain defined. To have the city roughly 90 minutes away from you, owning you like this again this season, has not been fun at all.Although we won the 1st game of the 4 game series,we had not hit well in the clutch situations, the whole series. We were looking at losing 3 in a row to them(and losing the series in our house 3 games to 1.)Our pitchers(especially Broxton)had been pitching scared, and that always yields poor results.Nomar had just struck out with men on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom 8th(down by just 1 run.)Then our closer is put in to keep it a 6-5 deficit. As often happens, closers are lost when they come in behind in games. So,we go to the bottom 9th behind by 4 runs.Looking at being beaten 3 in a row,and like 13 out of 17 games(by the team with basically lunatic fans.)I remember the exact thought I had last night before the bottom of the 9th:...."You know it never really has been the same since '88...It just isn't the same stuff anymore".......So,yeah,even though it seems like just one win, believe me, it was not just one win.
