One of the greatest in history just wrapped up at Presque Isle. It went on for two months.
They would give you a ticket for two spins of a prize wheel everytime you hit either a trifecta or superfecta.
The prize wheel had 30 plackards - half of which were for "slot play" between $5 and $50 - the other 15 had mostly food prizes such as a $25 gift certificate to the dining room upstairs or a bunch of different free buffets or conncession stand food.
The beauty about the free slot play is that they have a video roulette machine .. and you just go over and bet an equal amount of almost half your combined money on red and almost half on black - and cover the 0's. That way you were sure to turn 95% of your slot play into cash - and be done with it after a single roll.
At first, they counted dime supers ... you could just crush them in those 5 horse fields at Golden Gate and mismatches that result from races being taken off the turf.
It became a thing where if you went to the track on a Wed-through-Sun and didn't make at least $300 a day and a whole bunch of free food - you felt like a monumental idiot. Losing any single day was almost impossible.
It wasn't long before they decided to exclude dime supers - and only $1 tri's or supers counted.
I'm pretty sure I'm now in the guinness book of world records for most $1 tri's cashed in 3 weeks. It even got to the point where I was betting $25 trifectas in extremely chalky harness races with small fields .. though obviously $1 one's 25 times.
Last Saturday I bet $1 trifectas all day - ended up like $24 ahead for the day on them. Came in Sunday morning to spin the wheel - and made 2k on the spins, plus more free food than I'll ever be able to use.
I'm like that Morgan Spurlock guy from Supersize Me - I've put on 15 pounds in no time.
But anyway, the amusing part is that they give you a voucher after each wheel spin. The voucher is for a $7,500 giveaway drawing they had yesterday night. These vouchers are very thin and slick and tend to stick together.
So .. I get there a few hours early and have like thousands of these vouchers scattered all across a table upstairs - I, one-by-one, grab them and massage and crinkle each of them to make them much easier to grab. People are coming over telling me how sick I am and how they broke the mold with me.
So anyway, drawing starts, the guy dips his hand in ... first name drawn? Mine! I do the old lady celebration like Penny Tweety after the Belmont as I walk to the desk to identify myself.
By the way ... in order for slots players to get a single spin .. I think they needed to hit a jackpot of $1,200!

Glorious win for the horse bettors.
