Default PVal close to California return?

Grapevine buzz...

Having maintained a solid 'lifestyle' record in Louisianna, the CHRB apparently is close to granting a license to Pat Valenzuela..

I heard this P.Val rumor on the Roger Stein show on Saturday.

And in other Stein show recap news ... if Del Mar doesn't rename the Pacific Classic the 'Frankel Classic' ... it's because they're anti-semetic.

Again, where are the jews in high places at Del Mar? ... Roger asks.

It makes more sense to call the Jim Murray Invitational the Bobby Frankel. It would be within the same series of turf races as the Charles Whittingham Invitational for one thing.

Also, I don't think they've run the Jim Murray every year since its inception, which kinda fits with the way Frankel campaigned his horses.

Good take Rollo.

It can get very weird when it comes to naming stakes races.

Ogyigan put me on the spot at the gym when he asked me if I know of any stakes race named after Easy Goer ... and I couldn't think of one. Our conclusion was kind of 'maybe they should just name the Gotham after him' .. that or a 5.5f turf sprint at Saratoga or something.

They named a stakes race at PID after local politican turned eventual national politician Tom Ridge. Kind of amusing to name a stakes race after him - when I guess his thing back in the day was to tell the local bible beaters that he led the fight to shut down horse racing in Erie.

Of course - that seems like a stroke of genius when the signature race of the meet is a filly and mare sprint race named after a Southern golf tournament .. and they cleverly award the winning connections of the horse race a green jacket.

Sorry I have to disagree. I listened to it when it was the only one around. Not good. Similar to his training.

P Val was not only a very good speed rider, at worst he was a very good turf rider also. I think he will do just fine with the present jockey colony out there at the moment. If he can ride on synth the way he rides on turf, he should clean up if gets half decent mounts.

Somehow Stein does get decent guests. He is a horrible interview often answering his own questions. Makes you appreciate Byk all the more. Most weekends the stream fills so that ITUNES stops taking listeners once the show starts either they have poor bandwidth or Hardoon's picks are popular...

You haven't watched him much at La Downs. He's still good but he's nowhere near who he was in his heyday (it'd be tough to expect him to at his age).

He'll get absolutely owned by Rosario, Bejarano, and probably even T. Baze. Not to mention how tough it's going to be for the guy to get legitimate mounts right off the bat.

He's dropped off for sure. To be successful in Cali in 2010 he needs an agent who can kiss ass with the best of them.

No he won't.

He's washed up now. He pretty much sucks.

Since 2007 he's ridden in 1,251 races - won 14% - and his ROI is a horrid $1.25 ... meaning he's losing 37.5% on every dollar bet - which is more than double the track takeout ... and at over 1k races, thats a big sample size.

His numbers in turf races have even been a little worse.

Keep in mind, he's doing that riding at tracks in Louisianna and New Mexico.

He shouldn't be allowed to ride in the state of California ... unless he promises he will go on his drug binges again ... because maybe the drug binges help him a lot as a rider .. they can't make him a whole lot worse.
