Hard to believe that this race doesnt draw more entries. Always one of my favorite races.

After looking at the size of the fields of the other races posted...wow. This is like an overflow field!

Chuck, as a trainer why do you think connections don't take more chances in stakes? I know it's a multi layered question. But take a look at the sticky threads from today. The only stake that drew a somewhat full field was the turf stake at Delaware. I know there aren't many good horses out there. But with the gap closing in between "good" horses and mediocre, how come more people aren't taking chances in these races?

I wonder why Chad Brown didn't send Silver Timber here. . . Maybe a (bogus) distance issue.

In this particular race they should have kept it at 7f. That way you would have gotten some milers cutting back and shorter horses stretching out. I suppose that the race at Calder last week didn't help though the Dutrow/RR crew has another, more accomplished, off the claim in the Jaipur. Last year the race only got 5 and there is no guarantee there wont be a few defections in this one.

In the East there is little attempt at coordination of stakes which leads to overlapping spots especially in the 3 yo turf division when Colonials races are added in. I know i sound like a broken record but 10-15 years ago the NYRA stakes not only carried much more prestige but the purse levels were a lot higher for the most part. That isn't true anymore. But that only explains the legitimate or semi legitimate stakes horses. I believe that a big reason we see so few horses taking shots in these stakes that a handful of trainers control so much of the talent. Sure they may have a runner in one of these races but they may also have 2 or 3 in the barn that maybe wouldn't be one of the top choices but deserve a chance, especially in the unusual distance races like the 1 1/2 race.

The higher purse levels at Monmouth could be a factor too. An owner or trainer may choose to be 2-1 in an 85k allowance race as opposed to being 6 or 7-1 in a 200k stake.

Win percentage and some trainers obsession with it

Being that you can scratch without reason up to 45 minutes before post in a stake it makes me wonder why guys dont simply nominate and enter and take a look at these races. It isnt like this is a new trend.

He ran 3 days ago @ MTH. Probably too much to ask coming back in 6 days.

Dutrow claimed Stradivinsky for the same connections and he's running here.

1/5 for a $100k vs 2-1 or so for $200k, I guess.

He was, however, the defending champ.

Stradivinsky needs an oxygen TRUCK to get 6F. Or a little bit of what those 'connections' provide.

I agree. I envision both of us cursing at the eighth pole when he suddenly reaches his sixth gear.

I didn't bet the race. But what they have is real strong.
