1/5: Gulfstream (Opening Day; 5th-9th)
Gulfstream Park season breaks from the gate today, always a welcome addition to the winter racing lineup. Latest management shakeup at Hallandale has produced a number of innovations including a reduced takeout (15%) Pick 5 play, Early P4 and Beulah Park-style "Fortune 6" which grows jackpots by demanding a single winner on the .10 minimum bet. Based on Magna's development of their popular multi-track P5, and this summer's successful 5 race multi at Monmouth, you can expect the Gulfstream version to draw pool interest immediately. The P6 wrinkle, which was a good idea considering how little attention the wager received historically at GP, may take root more slowly.
GULFSTREAM POST-SCRATCHES 5th: ALW/N1X, 4+, 8.5f-T (P5, P3, DD, Super) Credible favorites in Upgrade and Cognac Kid, but neither have to win. Pricey options abound including pairs from Sheppard and Romans, grass movers from Serpe and Zito, and Wilkes' Versailles Road.. Adept conditioner has positive ROI's on all relevant karma angles, and fact that The Cliff's Edge bay is a half to Hollendorfer's excellent lawn lass Rendezvous is olive in the martini..
