I'm not sure it's so bad to give him credit on proper grammar as long as his math skills go right on being terrible.

You might want to read back on the thread, unless you missed the reason the link to the online calculator was posted. 25/1 odds = a 4% chance. You corrected it to 24/1 odds which is 4.17% rounded. The fact that you thought it was 24 to 1 means you did the math in your head. That you made the mistake happens to anybody. You knew there was a 4 in there somewhere. That you corrected someone else who got it right is the reason that I got annoyed. 1/25 = 4/100

Your situation on the affect/effect argument was basically a reversal of the odds thing. You knew the proper way to do it, someone tried to correct you, but they were wrong. You even spent time looking it up and providing sources. I just found it ironic. Alanis Morissette probably didn't as she improperly identified "irony" in a very catchy song to millions of teenagers. The point about your math skills I just made was a joke about how understanding of basic fractions is probably important when betting. 25/1, as I'm sure you know, means you'll get more money than you would if the horse was 24/1. That's all I'm saying.

While we're grammar griping, it always bugs me when people say things like "Joe and I" trying to sound sophisticated when "Joe and me" can be correct depending on the rest of the sentence.

You just ended that sentence using a preposition.

Misuse of decapitated is a favorite. Officer, would you describe the victim as being in severe pain? Yes, he was screaming because his forearm had been decapitated.

There's a slew of you that are very very mistaken.

ef·fect
–noun
1. something that is produced by an agency or cause; result; consequence

Clearly, in the original post, Mawhip intended to show quitting Lehman and selling his stock options prior to the crash produced wealth and he didn't really care what happened to the company after that. Now, if you puds couldn't infer that, it explains a lot about all the other bad opinions that take place here.

Right word, wrong use. The end.
So, your position is that you know what Mawhip really meant, therefore his misuse of "effect" is not really a grammatical error? Maybe you're joking.

Once again, the original sentence was "Lehman Brothers is not hiring but I left before the collapse so it didn't really effect me other than the fact that I sold all my stock before it tanked. "

There should be zero question that the correct word is "affect" not "effect". But if it makes you feel smart to call the rest of us 'tards', then by all means, proceed.

You are an unbridled moron. 25-1 odds does not equal a 1 in 25 chance. It equals a 1 in 26 chance. By your logic, 1-1 odds would equal a 100% chance. It does not. It equals a 50% chance. 1-1 equals one chance in two. 50%.

2-1 equals one chance in three. 33%.

Thus, 24-1 would equal one chance in 25. Or 4%.

I win. Again. I didn't miss the calculator. You are dumb. Thanks.

a woman boards a plane and sits next to a conceited passenger. attempting to start a conversation, she asks 'so, where are you from?' the other woman condescendingly replies 'from a place where you don't end a sentence with a preposition.' 'oh', replies the woman who pauses in silence for a few moments....

'so', she asks again, sweetly, 'where are you from, bitch?'

ah, grammar.....

i have to admit tho, i wish alot would disappear forever.

There is zero question.

"Rare Bog" is unquestionably wrong.

However, I give him credit. Internet debates about errors in spelling and grammar are usually quite boring. He remains so adamant in defending his ridiculousness, however, that he has elevated the debate from completely pointless to simply uninteresting.

It's not my problem she didn't use it as a noun (a fact also noted at the bottom of my post). Your original issue was with her word choice, not her usage.

Nice try to change your direction midstream. You need a new oar.
You, sir...

ARE WRONG.

It's AFFECT.

Shouldn't 'unbridled' be capitalized? Unbridled.

That's another thing.

The word 'tard' is so freaking overused.

Speaking of which, for some reason, I don't miss PG this time around.

Much sadness.

Well, I thought it was about 50/50 that it was an honest mistake, but I went with it anyways, to be in the spirit of things.

Okay, maybe it was more like 70/30 in favor of it being a real mistake.

I hate to interrupt the grammar cotillion, but DrugS has requested placement on the 180 day disabled list. I hope all of you are happy. I was looking forward to his upcoming presentation on the effect that Reconstruction had on the Phoenix Handicap.
