Default Derby undercard probables

Friday’s LaTroienne features a rematch between the 1-2 finishers in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, Unrivaled Belle and 2010 Oaks winner Blind Luck.

With its purse doubled to $300,000 purse, Friday’s Alysheba Stakes has become a meaningful prep for the Grade I Stephen Foster, and is expected to attract Clark Handicap winner Giant Oak, New Orleans Handicap winner Mission Impazible and graded stakes-winners Apart, Regal Ransom, Wise Dan, Demarcation and Kensei, plus 2010 Preakness runner-up First Dude.

Saturday’s $300,000 Churchill Downs (a name that needs to be changed now that it’s not a handicap, because there’s Churchill in too many other stakes names) features Grade I winners Here Comes Ben and Smiling Tiger, plus graded stakes-winners Capt. Candyman Can, Coffee Boy, Noble’s Promise, Chocolate Candy, Mythical Power, Aikenite and Caibrachoa, as well as Equestrio (the only horse to beat Derby favorite Dialed In). Both this race and the LaTroienne should be Grade I races next year.

Chamberlain Bridge, the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner, headlines the Twin Spires Turf Sprint. The Churchill Distaff Turf Mile will have 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Tapitsfly.

The Grade I Woodford Reserve will feature major winners Court Vision, Get Stormy, Al Khali, Battle of Hastings, Caracortado, Doubles Partner, Expansion and Little Mike. DRF also reports Prince Will I Am will be in this field along with Get Stormy.

Has Noble's Promise started since the Malibu?

Not sure why Chocolate Candy continues to be placed in top level races. His Potrero Grande comeback was a good tune-up for Grade 3-calibur route races, like the Mervyn LeRoy back in CA, not for Grade 1 races like the Met Mile.

Been saying forever now that they need to honor the late/great Luke Krytbosch and name this race after him.

Good call. I'd lead the charge for that.

Nice race too.
