I was surprised at the mention of manta rays needing protection, so i looked up stories to explain the demand. Yet another'tonic' demand (the gill plates are what they want) located in asia, one with no scientific basis, no medicinal qualities-reminds me of the demand for rhino horn.

Yao Ming speaks out against the ivory trade too. I don't follow celebrities, but when they use their fame for good, I am all for them!

Firehouse Salsa Cook-off!

Firehouse Salsa Cook-off *If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there's no hope for you. I was crying by the end. This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a salsa cook-off at Eng. 50's house.
Note: Please take time to read this slowly. If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction of the third judge is even better.

For those of you who have lived in Chicago , you know how true this is. They actually have a Salsa Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around.It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the firehouse . Judge #3 was an inexperienced Salsa taster named Ed Konecki, who was recently assigned after being promoted to Engineer.
Ed Konecki: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a salsa cook-off.. The original person layed-up at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table, asking for directions to 57th and Loomis, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Chris Quinn and Lee McCleod) that the salsa wouldn't be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free Paczki during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge #3."
*Here are the scorecard notes from the event: **
*SALSA # 1 - MIKE'S MANIAC MONSTER SALSA *
Lee McCleod-- A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Chris Quinn -- Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.
Ed Konecki -- Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These firemen are crazy.
*SALSA # 2 - EL RANCHO'S AFTERBURNER SALSA *
Lee McCleod-- Smoky, with a hint of cilantro. Slight jalapeno tang.
Chris Quinn -- Exciting cilantro flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
Ed Konecki -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.
*SALSA # 3 - EDUARDO'S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN SALSA *
Lee McCleod-- Excellent firehouse salsa. Great kick.
Chris Quinn -- A bit salty, good use of peppers.
Ed Konecki -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Zajac (the Beer Maid) pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer.
*SALSA # 4=2 0- BUBBA'S BLACK MAGIC *
Lee McCleod-- Black bean salsa with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Chris Quinn -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good topping for fish or other mild foods, not much of a salsa.
Ed Konecki -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Zajac, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This very ugly man is starting to look HOT ... Just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?
*SALSA # 5 - LISA'S LEGAL LIP REMOVER *
Lee McCleod -- Tangy, strong salsa. Habanero peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
Chris Quinn -- Salsa using Habaneros, could use less tomato. Must admit the Habanero peppers make a strong statement.
Ed Konecki-- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her salsa had given me brain damage. Zajac saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off.. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them..
*SALSA # 6 - VARGA'S VERY GARDEN VARIETY *
Lee McCleod -- Thin yet bold variety salsa. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Chris Quinn -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.
Ed Konecki -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Zajac. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.
*SALSA # 7 - SUSAN'S SCREAMING SENSATION SALSA *
Lee McCleod -- A mediocre salsa with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Chris Quinn -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried
about Ed Konecki. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Ed Konecki -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn't feel a thing. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with salsa, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing. It's too painful. Screw it; I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach..
*SALSA # 8 - BIG TOM'S TOENAIL CURLING SALSA *
Lee McCleod -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend salsa. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Chris Quinn -- This final entry is a good, balanced salsa. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the salsa bowl down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot salsa?
Ed Konecki -- No report.

skinned alive? doubt it. and i'd imagine the animals are also providing meat, not just leather. i don't go for cruelty, or for harvesting protected/endangered animals for supposed 'aphrodisiacs' and other nonsense, but i don't know that this fits in with that.
crocodiles are highly sensitive? i doubt zebras would agree. and i doubt anyone is skinning them alive. ostriches either, for that matter!

Go to the International Anti-Fur Coalition site or any of them really...

You wouldn't believe what happens at fur farms in China.
