![]() I certainly don't know what to make of this. Rangel and Graham seem interesting enough. Personally, I don't think there's much of a chance but with the challenges that face our great nation, this might be a way.
I really don't know, so I'm putting it out to DTer's to weigh in on. Thanks for your thoughts. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/4346646.html |

![]() as the article said, this isn't the first time rangel has tried this. and i think this time will be just as successful as the last.
having seen in the last few months that both enlistments and re-enlistments exceed the set quotas, i think they'll have a hard time convincing many that the draft is necessary. i know some countries, israel for one, have mandatory service in their military. i'm not so sure that would fly here.

![]() Just from a political point of view, I think it is political suicide for someone to support the draft. If Rangel had his way and the draft was brought back, I think that would kill the democrats. If one party is considered to be responsible for bringing back the draft, I think that party would suffer big-time at the polls. I think the vast majority of American are opposed to a draft.

![]() I completely agree with the idea of a draft. This would give everyone a better appreciation of military sacrifice. Bring it back.

I don't know what you teach. I've taught history. Military solutions don't seem to make sense to me anymore. Politically negotiated solutions seem like a better option, whether it's before the bombs start falling and the bullets fly, or after the bodies of both sides are gathered for burial by their families. Seems to me that all wars end at the same place. A few, fat, old, grey haired guys sitting around a table and talking. Perhaps the "talking" needs to be done before the military commitment. It ends up at the same place. Fat old guys at the table, denying the tragedies they've created, looking for their "share". Peace. |

![]() I just read that the plan would be all men and women, including mothers and fathers, between the ages of 18-42 years old would be required to sign up.
I don't think this plan will go over too well. I think the President would definitely veto it if it passed Congress. |

![]() Most career military officers and NCO's do not favor a draft. The position is that most do not want to depend on someone to cover their butts in combat if that someone was drafted and does not really want to be there. Volunteers make superior soldiers to draftees.

![]() Well, I support a universal draft in principle...I think EVERYONE should give two years of service to their nation BUT...it has to be universal in the sense that rich folks don't get excluded! If they produce a plan where every single person upon completion of high school or at their 20th birthday (whichever comes first) is called...I support that! But no damn exceptions except for folks on their death beds!!! In a wheelchair...you still serve, blind...you serve, no paying a doctor thousands of dollars to invent some medical reason, no exclusions whatsoever!!! AND...once in the service of your country, you are assigned duty based SOLELY on your abilities...no, "Oh your daddy is CEO of Halliberton, you sit behind this desk while the next guy gets his butt blown off in Iraq!" The idea of service to country is certainly valid...but raising an army of poor folks to die for the ever increasing wealth of OWG's (old white guys) is obscene! If we have leaders who aren't either retarded or in the pocket of special interests (some both...), then 99.9% of this service would be peaceful and constructive!
