Default The Return of the "Breeders' Cup Distaff"

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...p-distaff-back

Glad the name is back. I kept accidentally saying Distaff all the time anyway.

ETA: I knew Haskin would have something to say. He's been calling for this for awhile. He tweeted that the BC should make the change retroactive so horses like Zenyatta and Royal Delta won the "Distaff." I have to say I agree.

Ladies Classic made it sound like human females were running in the race.

I'm shocked they didn't rename it the Breeders Cup Zenyatta Classic.

now, if only they'd get rid of some of the garbage and put the saved purse monies into the classic...make it the top paying race in the world!

To be fair Zig, it is the top paying horse race in the world not run on plastic, at least most of the time.

Or as I heard Nick Zito describe his oppostion to synthetics yesterday, God made dirt and turf for horses to run on, not something in your grandfather's attic!

The Melbourne Cup and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe are both worth slightly more at the moment, I think. And the Dubai Sheema is worth the same.

none. and the purse should reflect that. if the day(s!) is so huge, it should be just huge races, not watered down product. quality over quantity, not the other way 'round like it is now.

Whats the purse 5/6 mil? You think 10 mil will attract a better field? What great 10f horse live and race on different continents that would be more apt to come if the purse was 10 mil?

I agree we dont need Juvy sprints and Distaff miles and Marathons etc

they could also up the turf prize-that does miss out on some top names every year.
i think it should be the top racing attraction...
i suppose we could also advertise that we don't arrest people for having sex.

Unless they raised it, I believe the Melbourne Cup is about 4.6 million and the Arc is about 4 million, but you might be right.

I was wondering if you all had seen this and what your thoughts were.

I'm with you all who think less is more.

(Oh and although I never said it yes... I have continued to say Distaff as well (like Merlinsky) and am glad they changed the name back to what it should be).

It doesn't relate to the Distaff but it's a change, an addition, and I thought I really don't want to clutter up the paddock when we have plenty of BC threads already.

Nothing against Arabian races in general (not something I pay attention to) but do we really need this?

Maybe I'm mean.

Calling it the World Thoroughbred Championships and then carding something for a different breed outside of that but still on the day is silly. Someone commented they've put an Arabian race on the Arc card, is that true? I love the breed, but they don't need to be doing non-TB stuff during a TB championship. It's a bit of a stretch to connect it to the origination of the breed. I assume there was a financial contribution involved?

'The Emirates Equestrian Federation founded the President of the United Arab Emirates Cup series twenty years ago to promote the bred of pure Arabian race horses worldwide. The President's Cup is staged at major racecourses Internationally each year and attracts the best horses globally. In previous years the races have been held at Ascot, Sandown and Newmarket Racecourses in the UK, Keeneland, Churchill Downs and Pimlico in the USA, Chantilly, Deauville and St. Cloud in France, Moscow Hippodrome in Russia, the Curragh in Ireland, Baden Baden in Germany, Ostend in Belgium, Veliefendi in Turkey and Duidigt in Holland.'

interesting. can't see where it would hurt.
