there really ought to be a thread titled ridiculous retirements....and all of these could stay together...bound to be one of them whose name we remember in 5 years.

I was going to start the thread regarding that issue and name it 'Ridiculous Stallions' instead, but the issue is that you will get yahoo's putting good sires on there. CINDAGO, COME ON. This one is even more ridiculous then MY GOLDEN SONG.

I think I might spend the rest of the night looking for comedy stallions

Cindago could have been a great horse if they didn't ruin him. He hadn't run in 8 months, he had never run two turns before, and he was eligible for nwx1. So where did they run him off the 8 months layoff? They ran him in a Grade III stakes race, going long against Brother Derek. He went head and head in :45 2/5 off an 8 months layoff, going long for the first time. What is so amazing is that he won the race. It was incredible. Even seasoned stakes horses who have run long don't win if they go head and head in :45 2/5. Cindago ran an incredible race. The problem was he ran too good. It was such a hard race on him that it killed him and he never ran again. What a crazy spot to bring a horse back in off an 8 month layoff. He was eligible for non-winners other than and he had never run past 6 furlongs.

They were right that he was good enough to win but it doesn't do you any good to win the battle but lose the war. If you ask a horse to do something that he's not ready to do, you can ruin the horse forever.

He was my favorite horse at the Barrett's March Sale in 2005. I thought that maybe we could get him for $300,000 or so until I found out that a few of the big-time guys really liked him too. He ended up going for $900,000.

By the way, not only did Cindago beat Brother Derek and Bob and Jon in that stakes race, but when he broke his maiden he beat Latent Heat and Point Determined. Those 3 horses(Cindago, Latent Heat, and Point Determined) ran 1,2,3 in that maiden race. That was probably the strongest maiden race of the Santa Anita meet. Latent Heat actually passed Cindago by about half a length at the 1/8th pole and Cindago fought back and beat him.

I saw both of Cindago's races at SA and DM and he was without question the cream of the west coast 3yo crop. Brother Derek would have been second fiddle if he stayed sound.

The stretch duel between Latent Heat and Cindago when he broke his maiden was the possibly the best race of the whole SA w/s meet imo. And he absolutely crushed Da Stoops, Bob and John, and Bro Derek in the El Cajon at Del Mar this summer.

If you saw the horse run i doubt there would be any laughter in regards to his talent....just frustration at what could have been and a 3 race career.

They gotta get that 800k back.If only rich people could control themselves at these sales.Notice what has been written on this thread about this horse.He was so n so's favorite horse at the sales.He beat so n' so.He was gunna be a great horse.In any other business,if somebody had a product that costs 900k,and it broke after using it just 3 times,then it would be an embarassment.Horses that can't run more than 3 times (without getting hurt)don't belong in a breeding shed.What is amazing is how these same people say they care about this breed.UH,no folks.You do not.Horses that can't run more than 3 times(without getting hurt) would be the last horses you would want in the breeding shed,but you don't care.You just care about making fast babies.Soundness of this breed is just not important to people.

just like not all mares should be broodmares not all colts should be studs...if he couldn't stay sound ( I can forgive sore shins or an abscess, but not a true unsoundness) then he shouldn't be breeding...but I don't know what his problems were or were not...
And why should every horse that looks like he had potential get a stud deal? Horses that prove they have talent should go to the shed...but not until after they have had an actual career... not 5 starts and out

UNsound or poorly handled. This has already been pointed out. Im not promoting this horse but dont be suprised by his results in the "shed" Can I say Vindication.

Yes, that is exactly right. The horse was poorly handled. Not only that, he was racing and training on two of the most unforgiving surfaces in the country. The surface at Del Mar last year was as a bad a surface as I've ever seen. We had horses that we had to get out of there after just a week of galloping. I've never seen a surface that bad. Horses that are normally very sound were coming back with problems after just a few days of galloping there. Santa Anita was no bargain either. We had plenty of horses that were having problems there and these same horses are perfect now at Hollywood training on the cushion-track.

At the 2 year old sales, they drill the horses pretty good. My trainers and vets are very conservative and they will not give us the "ok" on a horse unless the horse has great conformation and is totally sound. It is less than 5% of the horses at these sales that will get the ok from both our trainer and our vet. Cindago got the ok from both of them.

If Cindago was handled right and was training and racing on a decent surface, I think he would would have probably lasted for a while. By the way, I was not at all surprised that the horse was done after that Del Mar race. I talked to my trainer the day after that race and told him I would not be surprised if the horse was never the same again after that race.
