Little Children
Bababooyee, was it you who asked if I'd seen this yet? I finally saw it last night. Thought the acting was phenomenal (including Jennifer Connolly, who I think is VERY hit or miss), and the story was okay- I had a few problems with it. Overall quite enjoyable.
Did nothing to change my opinion that Kate Winslet is an actor for the ages.

Finally, a movie worth talking about!
Def a movie that you will hate or love, for the most part. Kate Winslet is without question the best actor of her generation. And her titles as the most Academy Award Nominations for an actor under 30 for all time makes it quite clear. I think she'll grab the 5th spot in the Best Actess race this year behind Mirren, Dench, Cruz, and Streep. Anywho, movie was disturbing in a way but important. The acting was great, the script was lacking a touch, the occasional narration was a tad annoying, but over all, good movie. |

Speaking of Jennifer Connelly films.....
I just saw one the other night, forgive me if you've talked about it already, BLOOD DIAMOND? What an amazing film, terrfic performances by Leonardo Di Caprio, and the great Djimon Hounsou (i know i butchered the spelling of his name lol) sorry. If Mark Walberg doesn't win the best supporting actor for his work in THE DEPARTED, then Djimo deserves it for Blood Diamond. As for Jennifer Connelly, her role isn't as flashy here, but she does a nice job too, i hope everyone will see this film, it's a gem lol. Haven't seen LITTLE CHILDREN yet, but i will when it comes to my area, which hasn't happened yet. Kate Winslet is a great actress, she did fine work long before TITANIC ever set sail to box office records. If anyone wants to see Kate earlier in her career, rent HEAVENLY CREATURES, it's a great film.

Connolly is hit-or-miss with me, but she was GREAT in Requiem for a Dream. Not as good as Burstyn, though. But who could be? I think Best Actress is a two-horse race this year, between Winslet and Mirren. Right now, I'm thinking it's Kate's year.

Well, im going to let my dorky side shine for a minute and confess that im a huge movie buff and oscar pundit of sorts.
Kate Winslet is my favorite actress but she wont be winning the oscar this year for an incredibly complex character. Heavenly Creatures was her amazing debut in film and her work in Holy Smoke, Hamlet, Jude, and Quills were all performances she should have been nominated for but was overlooked. She's an oscar darling and is extremely respected. Her best acting was done in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That script and character could have been an absolute disaster but she made it work and it ended up being one of the smartest movies in a very long time. After losing the Best Actress oscar two years ago for this film, results showed she came in second in voting and when voters were asked who they thought was the best of the year most answered with "Winslet, but I didnt really understand the movie and she had blue hair". Remember folks, the majority of Oscar voters are older, white, straight, conservative men. This is Mirren's year. She's won every pre-cursor, including one from the Black Actors Guild which has never awarded a non-African American actor before. If there's a challenger, its going to be the late rush of fellow Dame Judi Dench in the wonderful Notes of a Scandal. Its a delicious role for her thats quite against type. She plays a fanatical, obsessed lesbian that is killer. As it stands, Best Actress will go to Mirren, with Dench, Streep (in a supporting role... but being campaigned as a lead), Winslet and Cruz. Best Supporting Actress is interesting with newcomer Jennifer Hudson making one of the best debut performances in the history of Cinema. If you havent seen Dreamgirls, its a flawed movie but this girl is INCREDIBLE. Its being hailed as one of the best performances of all time, and rightfully so. She is probably the "lead" in Dreamgirls but is being pushed in Supporting for a few reasons... she wont win against Mirren being a newcomer, and rumors are that Beyonce has a clause in her contract for the movie that only she can be pushed for a Best Actress campaign. Hudson's stiffest competition is going to come from Cate Blanchett who is the pedophile object of obsession to the aforementioned Judi Dench character in Notes of a Scandal. |

My only thought for Winslet still pulling it out is that A)she's been nominated a bajillion times and not won and eventually the Academy seems to give an award for, "Oh, all right already" which is how one gets travesties like Pacino winning for "Scent of a Woman." (I'm NOT dissing Pacino; I just don't think that was a great performance) I loved Mirren in "The Queen" and actually would prefer she won, as I think Kate will have many more opportunities for Oscar roles than Mirren, but I think Kate has all the nominations going for her and B)she's pretty (my husband says don't underestimate the "young pretty" factor for Best Actress). I agree she was sensational in "Eternal Sunshine" and that movie was a thing of beauty. What a film. I agree that Hudson seems like the leader for Supporting- plus, Oscar looooves to give that to a newcomer. I thought "Dreamgirls" was supremely average, and honestly, thought she was decent, but very physically stiff. Don't get me wrong; I got weepy during "And I Am Telling You" but I don't know if that was her or the song being very well written (one of the few; I think it's a so-so score overall). Music is very manipulative, and can help along a performance. Hudson sure has a set of pipes. And she'll get better as she goes along, acting-wise. Though, on the other hand, a friend of mine who is a casting director and has heard that song many, many times at auditions, says that Hudson's performance in the film was the first time she'd actually gotten what the song was about, so that's to Hudson's credit. The performance in that film that really blew me away was Eddie Murphy. He's getting a nom for sure. I think Best Actor will go to Forest Whitaker for "Last King of Scotland." Here are my early picks for the Best Picture nominees (note: I am little better at Oscar picking than I am at handicapping!) Children of Men (dark horse, but I think it will squeak in) Pan's Labyrinth (which will win Best Foreign Language, anyway) Dreamgirls (because of the hype) Babel (the "message" film) Letters from Iwo Jima (because Hollywood loves Clint) Check back with me in two days; I'm sure my list will have changed by then. Certain bet: "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" will not get a Best Picture nomination, People's Choice Awards be damned! Will get a Special Effect nod for sure, though.

Eddie Murphy was great in it! Its def the performance of his career.
Something about Jennifer Hudson just resonated with me and im glad to see its an across the board reaction, excluding you! LoL In all seriousness, did you get chills during "the song" performance? I almost cried and im not someone who cries in movies. It was just a great cinematic moment. I actually think Winslet will have ZERO shot this year. The movie was loved or hated because of the nature of the film and the ending. The conservative and squeamish views of the majority of Oscar voters are going to be turned off by it, I think. To me, Mirren is this year's Philip Seymour Hoffman. No chance of losing. She's actually my surest bet. Actor should be interesting. Forest Whitaker provided the best performance of the year, but if the Academy is going to give an "Oh all right already" award its going to be to Peter O'Toole. Failing health, past his prime, a provactive yet safe plot but a good actor who's a legend but has never won an actor, being robbed at least once... With the Best Picture race I like your inclusion of Children of Men but im not sure it will have enough momentum. But I just cant see Pan's getting in, even with a few of the pre-cursor's already awarded. In fact, I think it will even lose Foreign Language to Volver. The Departed (for the win... not the best movie but has the box office, critics and director all going for it) and to roundout the category-- Dreamgirls Babel Letters The Queen |

It sucks for me if that gets nominated because I'm just not ready to watch any 9/11 films yet so I'll have to skip a Best Picture nom for the first time in a while. But it'll be nice that a movie starring a bunch of unknowns gets a nod, if it does get one. I forgot about O'Toole and "Venus"- you may be right about that one. I'll have to see that film soon- I love him.

United 93 was ignored by the Golden Globes... its chances of being nominated for Best Picture are falling rapidly.

Excellent movie. Saw it a week ago and was very happy I did. Som eof the violence is a bit much but it tells a story that needs to be told. Leo is da bomb. |
