Kentucky Horse Park trip

I've just been informed thatI am going to the Kentucky Horse Park this summer. Any Do's and Dont's I should know about. ??

seriously though...you should go early in the morning and see the draft horses harnessed for the day...it's pretty cool...they have a team of each draft breed that pull the trolley's around the park.

Do go see see John Henry and Cigar. JH is as old as Methuselah, amazing horse. Hopefully he's still kicking when you go because they were pampering him pretty good when I was there last. Food in all corners of the barn, all kinds of soft treats that his old teeth could handle.

Is this year when they are doing the Equestrian Games at the Horse Park or is that in 2008? Maybe it's even 2009 or 2010. Anyway, one of these days, they're going to have that there which would be very cool to see.

Aside from this, get off the horse park and schedule yourself one of the horse farm tours. Also, the thoroughbred training center. Claiborne is just a few miles up the road in Paris, but you need to make an appointment to get a tour there. As a rule of thumb, all farm tours are by appointment only.

Try to "do it all", as it's really great - be sure to do the museum, and be prepared to spend some hours there. If you go on their website, it lists the events scheduled for that time period (polo, horse shows, etc).

I live about 15 minutes from the Horse Park, e-mail me privately if you want hotel info, etc (there are some good hotels in Georgetown, if you don't want to stay in Lexington).

And if you can manage it, contact some of the local horse farms and attend some tours, especially if there's a stallion or two you'd love to see. Claiborne, Three Chimneys, etc. The "tour bus outfits" are good, you will get your moneys worth. And Keeneland, you have to go see Keeneland!

Louisville is an easy hour away, if you would like to see Churchill Downs and the Derby museum one afternoon.

I moved to the bluegrass area about 11 years ago from the Chicago area, and just love it.

I don't have all of the details yet. My cousin is the one putting this trip together. From what I understand this trip does involve appointments.

You'll have a ball, the Horse Park doesn't disappoint :-) The Calumet trophies alone are worth the price of admission to the museum.

Watch morning workouts then eat breakfast at the Track kitchen at Keeneland. You never know who you'll see there.

Lunch at Wallace Station in Midway, "Real" horsemen eat there.
