A backstretch employee at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., was killed early Tuesday, said local police and track officials. Police would not identify the dead man, but trainer Ralph Nicks said he was a groom who worked for him named Hugo Garibay.

Nicks and several of his employees said that Garibay was found stabbed in a dormitory area between 6 and 6:30 a.m. They said the victim was from Mexico and was in his mid- to late 20's, and had worked at the Nicks barn for two or three weeks.

Police on Tuesday did not say whether they had a suspect in the killing.

17-year-old arrested in stabbing

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday in the fatal stabbing of a groom who had worked the last several weeks for trainer Ralph Nicks at Gulfstream Park, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Hugo Garibay, 33, was stabbed three times in the neck with a screwdriver on Tuesday, according to a Nicks employee. The killing occurred sometime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. in the dormitory complex adjacent to the Gulfstream stable gate. Garibay's body was found by another Nicks employee who was looking for him to come to work.

The boy, whose name is being withheld by police because of his age, confessed to police Tuesday after being spotted and identified by employees at Calder Race Course, about 10 miles west of Gulfstream, according to the report. It was not known whether the boy worked at either track.

Garibay, a native of Mexico, and was very quiet and went about his work in a professional manner, according to Nicks's staff.

unfortunately things like this happen all the times on backstretches. numerous people have been killed on hawthorne and arlingtons backstretch here. during the fall meet here they had to call a slew of stickney police for a huge fight that erupted@the track kitchen at 6 am here.......apparently people were still drinking from the night be4. there are just way too many stories to tell but again its unfortunately very common

Just makes you wonder what are the safest and least safest places to work in this industry as far as this kind of thing goes. Where might women be in the most danger for example?

I was just going to say this wouldn't even make the papers in Chicago because its so commonplace....

is anywhere really safe in today's world? as far as the racetrack goes just working with the horses themselves is dangerous. arlington has alotta open barns since obviously they run in the warmer months of the year and last year i was walking one who was recovering from a injury and hadnt been to the track in weeks. horses get spooked but this 1 was already high strung as is with not training and when he got spooked proceeded to bolt like a bat outta hell and got infronta me and i got kicked luckily in the thigh, i only say luckily cuz had he got me in the knee or in the midsection it woulda obviously been alot worse

Yikes. They can all just go from 0 to 60 in a split second can't they? Fight or flight comes at you out of nowhere sometimes. I knew this one mare that was hallucinating I'm pretty sure. Not just spooky, she actually saw things coming at her like boogie monsters. I mean we could joke because we were ready at a moment's notice to bail if she pulled her stunts. It kept you from getting too tense while riding her. They straightened her out finally and she went from being flashy to some slow lesson pony because the thrill was gone.

Yeah I know the very idea of working with horses is one that involves accepting high levels of risk but I generally don't equate job risks of working with the animals themselves with screwdrivers to the neck. Not unless someone slipped one to John Henry in his birthday cake this year.

I guess you could say that dorms are among the most dangerous places for the human element then when you're at a track. Honestly though where are the places where a person would be well-advised to watch out (you can factor in the betting element but I mean hands on horse employees)? What are policies generally about carrying around mace? or anything else for that matter...
