Default Pletcher - quote on Quay

Does this make any sense? I sure think it does if he wants Quay closer to the lead.

“I don't have any problem with the fact that the horse will be fit and ready to run in the Kentucky Derby. I don't believe the eight weeks will be any excuse. You know, we're just starting to fine-tune his running style a little bit. I don't want to change it; I just don't want him in a position where he's spotting the field, you know, an enormous amount of ground in the early stages. And I think by being a fresher horse, he'll lay a little closer to the pace. Wherever he's comfortable, I‘m happy with that, but I just know that the more that he ran as a two year old and judging from this year, the more he runs, the more lackadaisical he gets in the early stages."

Default That is.....

How i would take those comments as well. Could it be a change in style in such a huge field? Since everyone seems to think the pace will not be very hot, will it make a difference?

not a quote to inspire a lot of confidence in CQ for the KD.

Sounds like he's talented but green! Does he wear blinkers? That would keep him a bit more focused, right?

he absolutely is lazy early on, and slow out of the gate. He's always been that way....I imagine he's just trying to get him interested a little earlier than normal so he doesn't have an insermountable task of making up 20 lengths. I trust johnny on him.

It is a long race, so I am not buying it. I would guess he is worried more about the possibility of a less then ideal pace scenario......or it is trainer talk for he is wacked in the head, the size of a mouse, and is sore all over.

either way I'm going to let that horse beat me. Anyone that hasn't had a prep of 1 1/8th isn't anywhere on my tickets

I really like the horse, always have. But the 8week layoff is making me really nervous. I dont want to leave him off, but I just dont know. I AM SO CONFUSED. Someone take the PP's away from me please help me, I ma going crazy. I think I felt Derby race info comming out of my ear earlier. Maybe I should just put all the names on a wall and throw darts at them.

He won't need blinkers when he comes from behind, like smith did on Tiago in the SA Derby. Remember 2, 3 or 4 horses added blinkers and Smith removes blinkers. That was a smart move on Smith's part. And that was a nice ride by Smith also. Another good ride was how No Biz kept pacesetter from passing in the Wood. Looked a little like the old Funnycide. If No Biz let the pace horse pass he would have had to go around him on the outside later. That was good riding. If he breaks right in the Derby No Biz will be one of the the 2, 3 or 4 horses leading the way, not pressing anymore than he has to. And should hang well into the stretch. The distance shoudn't be a problem. Like the other 19 horses he needs a good trip. And the better trip may be in the first group of 3, 4, or five horses. And he will probably be the strongest, more lasting of the others in his group

I think CQ is going to be CQ for the first three-quarters, no matter what the fractions are. He pretty regularly churns out :25, :49 and 1:13, which will probably leave him about 7-12 lengths back through the first three calls. Then he's going to start his kick, which is probably good for a :48-:49 half or so, but his problem is that some of the frontrunners and/or stalkers might be able to run a sub-:25 final quarter if they get a break up front.

At least that's how I see it.
