Times change. I remember when people wrote the Spurs where too soft and would not win a championship because they were "good guys, not dirty or mean enough."

Now when they win. The gripe turns to Duncan is not good for the NBA because he does not mouth off like Shaq. Honestly, in the press you just cant win. The real truth is the Spurs mess up the NBA TV ratings terribly. And somehow people think Stern has some motive for helping the Spurs win. This is the worst possible outcome for Stern and he already stated the best TV series would be Lakers v. Lakers.

The NBA has a problem. They promote flash, and to the horror of the league, good solid basketball wins. Sounds like time for another rule change after this low scoring series. The NBA really needs to decide if they want team basketball while advertising individuals constantly.

I will take that Mav cupcake if Dallas does not.

The Nba's problem is too many teams, too many bad players with jobs and too restrictive of a salary cap. The west being strong also hurts because the people on the east with the exception of sickos like me simply dont see the western conference games much because they are on too late.

I dont buy all that "promoting flash" crap and the Spurs are boring because play good 'team' ball. The Spurs are boring because they are not very interesting as individuals. Duncan is a great player but because he is a small market player who never says or does anything interesting, he gets forgotten. Parker is a very good player who is fun to watch but outside of his future wife there is not much going on with him either. Manu is also fun to watch but he has no catch either. Sports is best when there is a clearly defined rivalry where people can choose sides. It is best when there is a good vs. evil scenario. The Spurs just dont generate much love or hate and the fact that they win every few years instead of back to back to back takes away from any buzz they might create. Simply put people on the coasts dont care much about them.

The NBA has many issues with officiating, horrid franchises, too many foreign players, the lack of college basketball as a promotional tool, etc. They have weak management in their major market teams(Knicks,Celtics,Lakers,76ers), an increasingly meaningless regular season, high ticket prices,etc. The Spurs winning the championship is not a major deal, just not an interesting story.

The NBA as you stated stresses individuals. I really dont care about Kobe knocking up white girls, or Shaq's conquests. If this is what people want, forget it. Somewhere along the line basketball must be stressed. The only pass the NBA shows is when Tony Parker throws a pass between a players legs. The NBA stresses flash, you have to admit that if you watch the pregame. Teams as a whole are NOT stressed. (Endless stories about James Worthy diddling whores just dont exist anymore so that aint good, I dont buy that.) Duncan wants privacy. He wants a normal family. Not 50 kids like Shawn Kemp. This is never stressed. Allen Iverson throwing his wife around... now thats showing his woman. I dont buy that as interesting either. That game last night is one of the few times they will show Duncan's wife and kid.

The middle of the country teams winning seems a huge problem. But I just saw some figures of the foreign income that started to make some sense. Basketball is ahead of the other team sports (barring soccer) in that is more global. As examples:

Tony Parker and Eva Longoria (the most exciting aspect about the Spurs from the press) have a prenup: For Eva's sake of course... actually, no way. Parker's major income comes from endorsements in France and is substantially over Longoria's. People watch and pay a good sum of money in Spain to watch and replay NBA games. So maybe the NBA does not need the East or West coast. I have not seen the NBA financial statements, but it may be they are doing just fine if the above is common place. So I may not be looking at a big enough picture saying the Spurs are not a big draw.
