Pitching coaches can stay employed when their pitchers don't throw inside? I really don't understand the philosophy involved.Your supposed to get batters out,but do nothing to keep them from being comfortable at the plate. What a complete tragedy it is to just ignore one of your best ways to keep a batter off balance.They work so hard to change speeds,and types of pitches.To ignore the importance of keeping players off the plate? I just don't get it.If you watch the Dodgers,you would see a pitching staff that just ignores this.I don't think it is optional.It is a necessity.I saw PIERRE get brushed back off the plate.So some other teams still do it routinely.

With the refusal to bench Nomar Garciaparra or move Juan Pierre down in the lineup and the mystifying move to send Chad Billingsley to the pen to begin the season, the Dodgers have probably thrown away more games because of bad personnel decisions than any team in baseball this year.

I think pitchers dont pitch inside because they are afraid they will get thrown out of the game if they hit a couple of batters. Plus batters just let the ball bounce off of their protective gear and off to first they go. Baseball needs to do something about batters leaning into the pitches.

I agree 100%. The umps have taken the ability for the pitchers to throw inside away. They are so fast to warn people after a guy gets hit, that it compromises the pitchers from throwing inside. Also some of these guys that get hit have to realize that it is part of the game and the pitcher isn't trying to end your career. Just take your damn base instead of inciting a riot. That's the real problem, if guys weren't so fast to charge the mound then people would not have to be warned and then pitchers could pitch inside at will. So basically the pitchers can't pitch inside at risk of a steel cage match breaking out!

Biggest problem is that too many pitchers don't have enough command of their pitches to come inside. If you can pitch inside effectively, you've got it made.

How many times in today's game do you see guys getting a hit on an 0-2 pitch? If I ever gave up a hit at 0-2, I came out of the game. I was taught to waste a pitch at 0-2 to set up the next pitch. If you've gotten the low inside corner with the first two, the next one was high outside. Or, if you've worked to 0-2 on the outside corner, you bust 'em in on the knuckles. Of course, that was 30 years ago.....
