Jumbo Jet Trophy Preview 19 Sep 2007 Michael Maxworthy/Andrew Frost In what looks to be an outstanding lineup for this Sundays $200,000 Group 3 Jumbo Jet Trophy, Singapore’s latest star gallopers Capablanca and Lim’s Objective will take their place among the 16 runners. With a major portion of the field targeting the $1.35 million Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m on 11th November, the specialist sprinters may have an edge. While Capablanca and Lim’s Objective have not won over Sunday’s distance of 1400m, both appear to be in top order for what may be the first of many enthralling clashes between the two. Like other specialist sprinters to have won this race, World Airlines in 2005 and Arenti in 2006, it may pay to look for horses with sound form over the shorter distances. While all of Capablanca’s 10 wins have come over 1200m or less, he gives the impression the extra journey will not pose any problems. A look at the replay of his four-length demolition of top gallopers Arenti and Why Be on 10th June suggests that the five-year-old is now ready for the 1400m. While Capablanca was tuned up with a win over Why Be on the fibresand three weeks ago, Lim’s Objective will not have raced since winning the Three-year-old Challenge (3rd leg) 1600m on 29th July. Trainer John Meagher elected not to trial his talented four-year-old in the lead up to Sundays Race, so whatever Lim’s Objective does its reasonable to assume he will improve with this race under his belt. Despite the lack of recent racing and his inexperience compared to the opposition, Lim’s Objective has loads of ability and his class may see him through. Always Fast, Recast and Crusoe should appreciate the conditions of the Jumbo Jet Trophy with all three having excellent records over the distance and race best while fresh. Always Fast, a six-time winner over the 1400m trip hasn’t raced for 47 days and will appreciate the Weight For Age conditions. Always Fast showed top form in a 1000m trial win last Thursday September 13. Last start, Always Fast struggled under the 59kg’s when beaten four-lengths into eight place behind Scenic Sea on 5th August. Recast is another who is suited in Sundays feature. The diminutive seven-year-old also enjoys having his races spaced and usually finishes strongly off a fast pace. Crusoe is likely to have benefited greatly from a break after a tough campaign and must be respected. His recent form includes a second placing in the Singapore Derby Trial and a last start fifth placing in the Emirates Singapore Derby (2000m) on 15 July. Jaywin is the interesting runner as he holds the track record over the 1400m; his 1.22.2sec record was established in March of this year. Jaywin has had the benefit of a race just three weeks ago; however, he failed to make an impression on the fibresand languishing some nine-lengths behind the winner Capablanca. Others to have had a trial over 1000m during the fibresand season include Gold Cup aspirants King And King, Ruwi, World Delight and Jade. For the record, the last three winners of the Jumbo Jet Trophy Exaggerate, World Airlines and Arenti were all five-year-olds. It is not hard to understand why. Both horse and rider, King And King and Saimee Jumaat, had known the dizzy heights of success at some point, only to take hit a rocky patch, but are now both back to the pinnacle of racing. The seven-time champion jockey has wasted no time in hogging the limelight, barely a week from his comeback from a one-year disqualification, but to be honest, it was only a matter of time his riding skills would thrust him back at the top. But the real feat has to belong to King And King, once feted as the Group 2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup hero of 2006, who started a downward spiral when his bad legs played up, leading to his nadir – last in this year’s Singapore Airlines International Cup. But trainer Steven Burridge and wife Julie (above) never lost faith in their champion, nursing the Celestial Dancer seven-year-old back to racing fitness, first with a win in a 1800m race and, now a remarkable return to Group success. Burridge was thrilled at the win not only for the horse but for Julie his number one supporter. “I’m so pleased for Julie she has put so much work, effort and time into this horse.” While all eyes were on favourite Capablanca (Noel Callow) turning for home, rocketing home on the outside was the distinctive white and green colours of King And King. Pandemonium must have broken loose in the Burridge camp when Capablanca was found wanting inside the last 100m, leaving the coast clear for the King to rise and rule again. Recast, another comeback horse, stormed home for second one length away, while Capablanca battled courageously for third, three parts of a length clear of Jade (Eric Legrix). Julie Burridge was herself just as thrilled as trainer Steve. “He’s had a lot of problems this horse and we’ve been massaging his back and giving him plenty of stretches before his work. “He’s done a lot of work on the trial synthetic tracks (PolyTrack and Tapeta) and these have made all the difference to him. “I’ve been able to put the work into him and he’s come to the races a little bit fresh but fit as well. “I could see him on the way out to the barriers that he was a lot more relaxed in his action and being back on the turf of course has helped as well.” Jockey Opie Bosson (Recast) was beaming with his second placing. “He travelled great and really picked them up in the run home. It was a very good run.” Saimee’s first thoughts were for the Burridge track rider Agong who passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. “I really want to dedicate this win to him, he was a great person and we miss him very much. “The speed was quick which suited him and I was able to slot in with cover in the right position. “He travelled so well I was able to go for him in the straight and he just went whoosh! “It’s great to ride for someone like Steven who rides his own horses and really understands them. “He was able to give specific instructions on how to ride him and it really helped. “I haven’t ridden the horse before and I am extremely pleased to have been able to win for the stable.” The connections of Jumbo Stable were unfortunately not on hand to bring their prized possession back to scale, due to a restriction imposed on certain areas due to a virus alert in Singapore and while the win may not be as prestigious as receiving a trophy from the Queen, the feeling must be just as regal. Ace Armada sees off Big Easy 8 Oct 2007 Michael Lee The highly-talented Ace Armada’s return to the winner’s circle on Friday proved in no uncertain terms that the one-eyed horse had been written off a tad too hastily after his off-colour first-up run following his eye operation. The Singapore Guineas winner, ridden again by the irrepressible Noel Callow, was never out of the top three and was given a nice cart along right behind Royal City (Cheng Han Kok) while Aries (Danny Beasley), who despite not being able to cross from his wide barrier, showed the way one-off the fence. But 200m out, stablemate Big Easy with Kiwi rider Opie Bosson bidding for his second Kranji success, came with a full head of steam, while Huckleberry Finn (Saimee Jumaat) was putting in his two cents’ worth on the outside. Quality and sheer grit rose through in the last 100m as the Laurie Laxon duo shot clear from the rest, locked into a stirring battle that eventually saw Ace Armada on the inside, touching off Big Easy by a head. Though his two horses had run one, two, assistant trainer Theo Kieser, who was deputising for Laxon (in France for the Rugby World Cup), could not be blamed for feeling a little one-sided – just like Ace Armada. “That was the perfect run for Ace Armada tonight. He had Big Easy on the side that he could see (his right hand side) and that helped him kicking along,” said Kieser. “He needed that win to give him that little extra confidence that he had lacked at his first-up run.” Callow, who as usual was the recipient of plaudits for another masterful ride, deflected the credit to someone who had no vested interest in the Lord Ballina four-year-old. “I have to thank Patrick Shaw for that win,” said Callow. “Pat suggested we take off the pacifier from the good eye and leave it open while keeping the pacifier on the eye that can’t see for trackwork. “The idea is the pacifier gives a ‘webby’ image which the horse probably didn’t like at his last start. "We took Pat’s advice on board and it worked.” As for Big Easy, it was another huge run from the former Horse of the Year, who did nothing wrong except come up against a very able-bodied horse. “Big Easy ran on good but the big weight got to him,” said Bosson.
