Default Medical Question???????

In racing terms, what is a "paralyzed throat"? A once promising colt I bred and raised was just retired due to this. I've tried to google it and I keep finding horses who are having surgery or had surgery on "paralyzed flaps". I'm really curious because I know the current owners would try and fix the problem if there was any way possible. Thanks in advance.

Is he a roarer? I don't know anything about horses with paralyzed throats, but when they have a paralyzed flapper, that really stinks and not much can be done.

Paralyzed Throat in humans would normally refer to a paralyzed vocal chord which is the doorway to the lungs or trachea. If the cords do not open (abduct) when needed the horse cannot increase his ventilation or breathe faster to eliminate CO2 when running.....all of that is built on the supposition that horses and humans have similar anatomy which probably should be commented by a real vet which I am certainly not...

Causes 1) trauma 2) lack of blood supply or ischemia 3) thyroid disease or polyps in humans again of course.

Hope it helped a little...

Honestly not sure. You know the horse, it is Exhale. I just get updates here and there since he was sold and all I was told was he has a paralyzed throat and is retired.

He is ok. He is either back in Kentucky or coming back shortly. He's going to the farm that bought him from me. Said they would just use him as a riding horse. They love that horse to death and will take good care of him.

I remember the horse... Glad to hear he is going to have a happy retirement. Bummer about his throat problem.

Ok, in case anyone still has Exhale in their stables I'll get this out of the way before I look like a bigger idiot. As I said above I was told specifically he had a paralyzed throat and was on his way back to Kentucky by someone who would know for sure. I get a notification today that he worked 4 furlongs at Santa Anita. Anyway, thanks for medical input and humor in the thread. I now officially have no clue what's up with him apparently.

Exhale is on the CHRB vet list. So I imagine he has to pass a vet check in order to race again. Was listed as unsound.
