![]() enjoyed this piece, thought I'd share:
Bellamy Road, by Michael Ventura, copyright May 4th, 2005 Bellamy Road was bred by Diane Cotter of Ocala , Florida by breeding her winning homebred mare Hurry Home Hilary to Concerto, a stallion standing for only $3,500 at the time. Diane Cotter was repaid for her efforts by selling him as a 2yo in training for $87,000 to George Steinbrenner at OBS and he has been repaid in turn by possessing a racehorse who has won 5 of 6 career starts, with the most impressive thus far being his surreally easy looking stakes record breaking and Track Record equaling score in the $1 Million Wood Memorial (GI). An interesting thing about Bellamy Road is that he comes from a very young sequence of dams (his 1st was 7 when she foaled him, his 2nd was 5 when she foaled his dam, his 3rd was 4 when she foaled his 2nd, etc); and this may very well help explain why there are no big ones save him under his first 3 dams yet. Once we reach the 4th dam however, you get to a Cynthia Phipps bred filly named Arabian Dancer, a Matron (GI) placed daughter of Damascus and the dam of both the Clark Handicap (G3) Winner and nice sire Out Of Place and the Athenia Handicap (G3) winning filly Lead Kindly Light (ped). Lead Kindly Light is in turn the dam of Cynthia's very nice Sprinter-Miler Gold Fever, a winner of the NYRA Mile (GI). Jackpot, a winner of Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) out of Out Of Places' full sister Frolic, is the other Graded Stakes Winner under Arabian Dancer. Arabian Dancer's dam was Ten Cents A Dance, a daughter of Buckpasser and the dam of the Cynthia Phipps homebred mare Versailles Treaty, an excellent daughter of Danzig who won the Alabama (GI), the Test (GI), the Ruffian (GI), and the Gazelle (GI). Versailles Treaty of course became the dam of Saarland . Ten Cents A Dance was out of a daughter of Native Dancer named Exclusive Dancer, who was a half sister to none other than Affirmed's sire Exclusive Native and the dam of both Travers (GI) Stakes winner and record holder General Assembly and a Multiple G3W daughter of Riva Ridge named Expressive Dancer, who was in turn the dam of Bertram Firestone's Jim Dandy (G2) and Brooklyn Handicap (GI) Winner Chief Honcho and the Seattle Slew broodmare American Dance, who is the dam of the good sire American Chance, who won the Jersey Derby (G2) and Forego (G2) Handicap. Expressive Dancer was also the dam of Chief Honcho's full sister Bright Tiara, the dam of Nanbu Hai (JAP-GI) Winner Gold Tiara. This is the female line of 1906's champion 2YO Filly and 1907's Co-champion 3YO Filly Court Dress, a Spinaway and Gazelle Winning James R. Keene bred daughter of Disguise who is also the ancestress of an important Canadian sire named Ladder (who died all too young in a barn fire shortly after covering Mintwina to conceive the King's Plate winner Bunty Lawless) and the significant Canadian bred sire Deputy Minister (who was 3x5 to none other than Ladder's son Bunty Lawless and thus linebred 5x6x7 to his 6th dam). A profoundly important thing about Court Dress is that she's bred on a powerful Formula One Pattern to the Great Matriarch Queen Mary (10-A) through the female lines of her sire Disguise, damsire Hampton, 2nd damsire Breadalbane, and dam Hampton Belle (this making her 4x5x5x6 to her). It should also be noted that both Court Dress and her sire Disguise (who famously conquered the 1900 English Triple Crown Winner Diamond Jubilee in the Jockey Club Stakes) successfully integrated quite possibly the strongest English damline founded in the 19th Century (Queen Mary) with quite possibly the strongest American damline founded in the 19th Century (the Gallopade family of Disguise's sire Domino). This integration was reinforced when Court Dress was bred to Voter, a stallion who effected 4x4 inbreeding to Queen Mary's Prince of Wales Stakes Winning grandson Breadalbane, to create Inaugural. And this integration was reinforced yet further when Inaugural was in turn bred to Peter Pan, a stallion who effected 3x4 inbreeding to Gallopade's legendary descendant Domino, to produce Panoply. Then Fairy Gold (9-e) got into the act as Panoply was bred to her son Fair Play's son Display to produce the nice filly Parade Girl and Parade Girl was in turn bred to Pilate, a son of Fair Play's half-brother Friar Rock, to produce Good Example. Good Example was thus 3x4 to the great broodmare Fairy Gold. It is also very important to understand the closely related point that Good Example was bred on a reverse cross of the maternal half-brothers Fair Play and Friar Rock to none other than War Relic, the preserver of the Man O' War male line and the sire of Relic. Also, War Relic has a 2nd dam in Problem who was bred on the exact same Commando/Voter cross as Good Example's 2nd dam Panoply. A powerful little example of cluster breeding at its finest is what you get when you cross War Relic and Good Example, and I should note here that Good Example's female line descendant Deputy Minister has powerful nicks with War Relic's two strongest sources: His son Relic and his double great-grandson In Reality (who was of course inbred 3x3 to War Relic). I say this as Deputy Minister and Relic have combined in the first 5 Generations of the Hopeful (GI) and Vosburgh (G2) winner Salt Lake; Salt Lake's Mazarine Breeder's Cup (CAN-GI) Winning Daughter Salty You; the Man O' War (GI) Winner Magistretti; the Champagne (GI) and Hollywood Futurity (GI) Winner Toccet; and the Whitney (GI), Queen's Plate (GI), and BC Classic (GI) Winner Awesome Again. In the same vein, Deputy Minister also forms a powerful nick with In Reality, who has combined with him in the GIWs Ghostzapper, Halfbridled, Take Charge Lady, House Party, Ten Most Wanted, Midas Eyes and Request For Parole. This is of especial relevance to the greatness of Bellamy Road as that one traces in the female line to Good Example and is 6x6x8 to War Relic through Concerto's cross of In Reality and Caro's cross of Relic (note also that Bellamy Road's 4th damsire Damascus brings in War Relic's full sister Speed Boat through the female line of his sire Sword Dancer). (Inbreeding to War Relic through In Reality and Relic in the context of a long Good Example female line is a pattern also found in Ghostzapper.) |

![]() To further hammer home the point about the Good Example descended Deputy Minister and War Relic, we'll also note Deputy Minister has combined with War Relic's Travers Stakes Winning son Battlefield in the 5 Time GIW Silverbulletday, who was the 1998 Eclipse Champion 2YO Filly and 1999 Eclipse Champion 3YO Filly, and with War Relic's daughter En Casserole in the very fast G2W Badge of Silver. Deputy Minister has also combined with War Relic's daughter Ellen's Best (who was actually inbred 1x3 to War Relic and his full sister Speed Boat) in the Four Time G2 winner Flag Down, a quality earner of $1.7 Million who also finished 2nd in the Man O' War (GI), Early Times Turf Classic (GI), and Manhattan Handicap (GI) and 3rd in both the Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) and BC Turf (GI).
(This comes to a grand total of 13 GIWs, 6 Multiple GIWs, and 4 American Champions crossing Deputy Minister on one side and War Relic on the other.) Intriguingly, Good Example was bred to Shut Out to produce the next link in the Bellamy Road Chain (this incidentally being where it branches off from the Deputy Minister line): Exclusive, a Alfred G. Vanderbilt bred daughter of Shut Out who was 4x4 to Fair Play, 4x4 to Peter Pan, 4x5 to Rock Sand, and 4x5x5 to Fair Play's dam Fairy Gold (note that Fair Play, Rock Sand, and Fairy Gold are major building blocks of Man O' War and his previously mentioned son War Relic). The reason in main for this breeding earning a description evincing strong interest on my part is that Exclusive's sire Shut Out was an equivalent to a filly of long ago named Weno: Shut Out being 2x3x4 to Broomstick, Hamburg, and Pennant; and Weno being 2x2x2 to Broomstick, Hamburg, and Pennant's full sister Cherokee Rose. And of what relevance is this to that which has come before, you ask? Why, Weno was the granddam of War Relic's best son Intent! Thus Intent's sire War Relic was an equivalent to Exclusive's dam Good Example and his granddam Weno was an equivalent to Exclusive's sire Shut Out. A very excellent example of an intricate reverse can thus be seen in the relationship of Exclusive and Intent. Here I should note that Shut Out and Weno's grandson Intent combined in the horse responsible for the continuation of the In Reality male line forward into present times: his best son Relaunch, as it tends to show the significance of the relationship between Weno and Shut Out. But the parallels betwixt the Female Family of Bellamy Road and the Male Line of In Reality don't stop there; for Exclusive was bred to Native Dancer to produce Bellamy Road 's 6th dam Exclusive Dancer. This is significant as Native Dancer's dam Geisha was a filly sharing Discovery, Whisk Broom II, and Sweep with Intent's best son Intentionally, who became the sire of In Reality. Thus when we line up Exclusive Dancer and Intentionally we find a complex and intricate relationship involving three sets of overlapping equivalents: Good Example and War Relic, Shut Out and Weno, and Geisha and Intentionally himself. If we pour it all together in a hodgepodge we find that Exclusive Dancer is 3x4x4x5x5x5x5x5x5x5x5x6x6 to Discovery, Display, Fair Play, Friar Rock, Whisk Broom II, Broomstick, Sweep, Peter Pan, Royal Rose, and Rock Sand. And Intentionally is 2x4x4x4x4x5x5x5x5x6x6 to Discovery, Whisk Broom II, Fair Play, Friar Rock, Balancoire, Rock Sand, Hamburg , and Sweep. As Intentionally was the Champion Sprinter of 1959 and a one-time world record holder for 8f (1:33.1), and Exclusive Dancer was a Miss Florida winner and good broodmare; we may say that this build-up/cluster of ancestors did alright by both of them and that combining the two in one pedigree would be desirable by my theories. And combining them has proven successful in both Bellamy Road, who crosses them 4x6 through the female line of his dam and the male line of his sire Concerto's damsire, and a very nice little sprinting filly and earner of over $1.5 Million named Gold Mover, who is by Gold Fever (Bellamy Road's fellow descendant of Exclusive Native's granddaughter Arabian Dancer) and out of a mare by Intentionally's other son of significance besides In Reality: Tentam. |

![]() Thus Gold Mover, a winner of the Schuylerville Stakes (G2) at two and a Winner of the Princess Rooney Handicap (G2) at three and four besides winning three G3 Events, was bred on the reverse to Bellamy Road and thus provides support for the idea that this cross of Intentionally and Exclusive Dancer is playing an important causative role in his success.
But my most powerful goad to ascribing cause and effect to the relationship between Bellamy Road's 3x6 Intentionally / Exclusive Dancer cross and Bellamy Road's extraordinary abilities is that the majority of the ancestors forming the ancestor clusters trace back to lines found close up in Bellamy Road himself: Discovery and Hamburg trace to the Gallopade (23-b) Family of Bellamy Road's grandsire Chief's Crown; Fair Play and Friar Rock trace back to the Fairy Gold Family of Bellamy Road's dam grandsire Traffic Cop, Whisk Broom II traces back to the Maggie B. B. (4-m) Family of Bellamy Road's 2nd damsire Cozzene, and finally Peter Pan is a son of Commando, who traced back to the same Diana (12-B) Family as Bellamy Road's sire Concerto. Thus not just female lines, but combinations of female lines were reinforced in Bellamy Road . And this is the key to it all both in this particular (Intentionally + Exclusive Dancer) and in a more general (i.e. Dispersed) sense. For instance, Bellamy Road is 6x6x7x7 to Native Dancer, a stallion whose 2nd damsire John P Grier combined the female line of Queen Mary from whence sprang Bellamy Road himself through his damsire Disguise, the female line of Maggie B. B. from whence sprang Bellamy Road's 2nd damsire Cozzene through his sire Whisk Broom II, and the Gallopade female family from whence sprang Bellamy Road's grandsire Chief's Crown through his dam Wonder's 2x3 inbreeding to Domino. And for another instance, Bellamy Road is 5x6 to the stamina influence Prince John, who combines Bellamy Road 's Queen Mary line coming through his grandsire Prince Rose and a 5th Generation cross of Black Toney with a line of Gallopade coming through his damsire Count Fleet's damsire Haste. Also, Bellamy Road is 6x7x8x8x8x9 to Discovery, whose grandsire Fair Play traces to the Fairy Gold female line of Bellamy Road's dam grandsire Traffic Cop and whose 2nd dam Adrienne has a 4x5 to Formula One Pattern to Lady Hardaway where one source, the Gazelle Winning Filly The Butterflies, is by an early Maggie B. B. stallion named Sir Dixon and the other source, Lou Lanier, is by a stallion named Lever whose dam Levity (12-b) is actually the 12th dam of Bellamy Road's sire Concerto. This is especially meaningful as the damsire of Adrienne is Hamburg , a very fast and important stallion who was by the 4xTime Leading American Sire Hanover, who was 3x3 to Vandal, a son of Concerto's 13th dam the Tranby Mare (12-b). Also, Hamburg himself was 4x4x5x5 to the legendary Lexington, another stallion tracing back to the Lady Grey branch of the Diana (12-b) Clan; and besides reinforcing the female line of Concerto in this powerful way, Hamburg traced back in the direct female line to the Gallopade (23-B) Family of none other than Bellamy Road's grandsire Chief's Crown. But now is where it gets interesting, Hamburg's sire Hanover traced back to the Great Early American Taproot Selima and Selima's full sister in blood was none other than Sophia, the ancestress of the 21-A Female Family to which Bellamy Road is inbred 2x3 to through his damsire Deputed Testamony and his sire damsire In Reality (Selima's Earl of Godolphin, yes that Earl of Godolphin, bred Full Sister-In-Blood is also the ancestress of Tranby, the sire of the recently mentioned Tranby mare, and Hastings, the hot-tempered sire of Fair Play, besides many other good horses such as Broad Brush). And to top it off, Hanover's damsire was Bonnie Scotland, a St Leger Runner-up who became the all-important beachhead of his mother Queen Mary in America when he was imported from England in 1858 (Queen Mary of course being the direct female line ancestress of Bellamy Road himself through the inbred Court Dress). Bonnie Scotland started his American Stud Career in Ohio and ended it at the Belle Mead Stud in Tennessee (where he was the Champion American Sire of 1880, the year of his death, and 1882), and he not only damsired Hanover who combined with the Gallopade line in Hamburg, but also grandsired Ben Brush, who formed a justly famous nick with Hamburg's Maternal Half-Uncle Domino (see especially Sweep and Black Toney, who additionally traced back to Queen Mary in the direct female line through her daughter Bonnie Doon). It's also notable that Bonnie Scotland sired the great runner Luke Blackburn, a Champion 3YO Colt of 1880 who won 22 of his 24 starts at that age, from a mare named Nevada who was by the Lady Grey (12-b) stallion Lexington and out of Lexington's fellow Lady Grey female line descendant Lightsome, a full sister to Vandal and a daughter of Concerto's 12th dam Levity. Interestingly, though Luke Blackburn's influence has essentially died out and he can't be found in Bellamy Road, his dam Nevada actually shows up his 15th Generation through Swoon's Son's 2nd damsire Greenlock, a horse combining Levity through his dam, Maid of Mashem through Star Shoot, Queen Mary through St Leonards, and Gallopade through Hamburg and Domino. It should also be noted that the Female Families of Bellamy Road recapitulate the Female Families of both his sire Concerto's 7th dam Kolinsky and Bellamy Road's own 9th dam Parade Girl, who of course combined Chief's Crown's Gallopade female family through her grandsire Domino with 4x5x5x6 inbreeding to Hurry Home Hillary's Queen Mary female line. |

![]() Logically enough Concerto's ancestress Kolinsky was a representive of Concerto's Levity (12-b) female line; but the important thing is that she combined it with the Maggie B. B. line of Cozzene through her sire Uncle, the Selima female line so closely related to Deputed Testamony's Sophia line through her dam grandsire Hanover, and finally the Maid of Mashem tribe of Traffic Cop and Fairy Gold (to whom War Relic, who shows up 6x6x8x10 with his full sis Speed Boat in Bellamy Road, was inbred 3x3) through both her grandsire Star Shoot and damsire's damsire Peter, who was not incidentally a full brother to Pauline (the 2nd dam of Fairy Gold, who in turn is the 8th dam of Traffic Cop). Layers upon layers.
So to backtrack a bit, under Bellamy Road's 6th dam Exclusive Dancer (b. '67) we find the Graded Stakes Winners Out Of Place, Lead Kindly Light, Gold Fever, Jackpot, Versailles Treaty, Saarland, General Assembly, Chief Honcho, Gold Tiara, and American Chance. This is a major clue in determining the source of Bellamy Road's class as his sire Concerto is by Chief's Crown (a son of Danzig tracing back to the Famous Gallopade Family [23-b]) and out of Undeniably (a daughter of In Reality tracing back to the exceptional Early American Taproot Diana [12-b] through Levity). You see, Arabian Dancer's G3W and Multiple GI Placed son Out Of Place is by Cox's Ridge, a stallion bred on the exact female family parallel to Concerto: Cox's Ridge traces back to Diana like Concerto and Cox's Ridge's sire Best Turn traces back to Gallopade just like Concerto's sire Chief's Crown. In fact, the 2nd dam of Best Turn is Miz Clementine, a full sister of Chief's Crown's 5th dam Twosy. This may indicate an affinity between Arabian Dancer and/or her female line and combination of these two great American Taproot lines called Gallopade (23-b) and Diana (12-b) after their founders (please see the 'Bunty Lawless, Affirmed, Deputy Minister, Ghostzapper, and Bellamy Road' section below). A daughter of Bellamy Road's 5th dam Ten Cents A Dance, the well-nigh Hall Of Fame Quality mare Versailles Treaty is in fact by none other than Danzig, the sire of Chief's Crown and the great-grandsire of Bellamy Road; and her son Saarland brings in a strain of Concerto's damsire In Reality and a strain of Bellamy Road's 3rd damsire Mr Prospector. Thus Bellamy Road is 3x5 to Danzig and Ten Cents A Dance, the sire and dam of Versailles Treaty, and is 3x3x4x5 to Danzig, In Reality, Mr Prospector, and Ten Cents A Dance, who show up 2x4x3x2 in Versailles Treaty's son Saarland the Remson (G2) Winner. Moving to Bellamy Road 's 6th dam Exclusive Dancer, we find that her excellent racing son General Assembly was by Secretariat, the damsire of Bellamy Road 's grandsire Chief's Crown. Thus Bellamy Road is 4x6 to the sire and dam of the Hopeful (GI), Gotham (G2), Vosburgh (G2), and Travers (GI) winner, who not incidentally was an even better racer than his victories would suggest as he had the misfortune to be born the same year as a horse named Spectacular Bid, who finished but one place ahead of him in the Champagne (GI), Kentucky Derby (GI), and Marlborough Cup (GI). Also, Exclusive Dancer was the 3rd dam of the Brooklyn Handicap (GI) Winner Chief Honcho and his GI Producing Full Sister Bright Tiara. This is very significant as the sire of both was none other than Bellamy Road 's grandsire Chief's Crown. Thus five out of the eleven GSW and all three of the GIWs (Versailles Treaty, Chief Honcho, and General Assembly) under the 6th dam share significant elements on their sireside with Bellamy Road 's sire Concerto. And to summarize another way, Chief's Crown sired the GIW Chief Honcho from Bellamy Road's female line, Chief's Crown's sire Danzig sired the Multiple GIW Champion Versailles Treaty from Bellamy Road's female line, Chief's Crown's damsire Secretariat sired the Multiple GIW Champion General Assembly from Bellamy Road's female line, Concerto's damsire In Reality combined with this female line in the G2W Saarland, and finally a stallion bred on the same Gallopade (23-b)/Diana (12-b) Female Family cross as Concerto himself (Cox's Ridge) sired the G3W Out Of Place from this female line. Bunty Lawless, Affirmed, Deputy Minister, Ghostzapper, and Bellamy Road But why has Chief's Crown had such success with the Exclusive Dancer female family? He's gotten the Brooklyn Handicap (GI) winner Chief Honcho and his GI Producing Full Sister Bright Tiara from Exclusive Dancer's daughter Expressive Dance and the Record Setting Wood Memorial (GI) Winner Bellamy Road from Hurry Home Hilary, a filly with Exclusive Dancer as her 5th dam. The only sires from Exclusive Dancer with foals to race are American Chance, Out Of Place, and Gold Fever and for this reason those Three GIW or GI Producers are drawn from a very small sample. So small a sample in fact that the entire PedigreeQuery Database only has 17 Combining the two within 6 Generations and of course 2 of those 17 are Chief Honcho and Bellamy Road and another one is the GI Producer Bright Tiara. 8.5% GIWs isn't too bad, I think! To find the answer to the question of causation with which this section was begun we must consider the Wide World of horses tracing back to Bellamy Road 's 8th dam Good Example and 10th dam Panoply. To begin: As previously stated, a half brother of Bellamy Road's 6th dam Exclusive Dancer was the Sanford Winner Exclusive Native; and Exclusive Native got his Best Offspring Affirmed from the female family of Gallopade coming through Domino's full sister Correction. Now, Bellamy Road's 10th dam Panoply was a nice racefilly and her best two sons were a MSW and sire of Champion Steeplechasers named Annapolis (by Man O' War) and another MSW in Ladder (by another son of Fair Play in Ladkin). He was imported into Canada to stand at stud, but tragically for the breed Ladder only sired three foals before his death. Fortunately though on of those foals was the tough King's Plate Winner Bunty Lawless, and that very nice sire traced back in the female line to none other than Gallopade through Domino's dam Mannie Gray's full sister Alice Gray (AKA Domino's Maternal Aunt). Significantly, the American Champion 2YO Colt and Two-Time Leading American Sire Deputy Minister traces back in the female line to Good Example and is 3x5 to Bunty Lawless. This means that the excellent racehorses and very important sires Affirmed and Deputy Minister both combine the Good Example (10-a) female line through either their sire or dam with either a close shot of the Gallopade (23-b) female family or inbreeding to a member of that tribe. More recently, we find that the recent American Horse of the Year Ghostzapper is not exempt from this pattern as he has Good Example family member Deputy Minister as his grandsire and traces back in the female line to Gallopade through Affirmed's 4th dam Native Gal (note here the significant fact that Ghostzapper shares In Reality with Bellamy Road ). And finally the Wood Memorial Winner Bellamy Road himself traces back to Good Example in the female line and has a grandsire in Chief's Crown who traces back to Gallopade through Reel through Two Bob through Miss Carmie. And of course Bellamy Road 's GIW relative Chief Honcho combines Gallopade through his sire and Good Example through his dam. This all indicates a powerful female family affinity between Good Example and Gallopade and if we wanted to get into the whys and wherefores we could note that Panoply is inbred 3x4 to the greatest example of the Gallopade line, Domino, and in the cases of Affirmed and Deputy Minister the Gallopade came through full sisters of either Domino or his dam Mannie Gray. |

![]() Arabian Dancer
Arabian Dancer was bred to Mr Prospector to produce Bellamy Road 's 3rd dam Rub Al Khali . She was unraced and hasn't produced much besides a $133K Earner named Pitkin County from the cover of Danzig's son Pine Bluff , a winner of the Houston Juvenile Stakes named Gallant Talent, and a winner of the East Coast Rockingham Stakes (Eng) named Resounder. The mare is actually still in production and produced a 2003 colt by the expensive stallion Giant's Causeway . More importantly, Rub Al Khali was inbred 3x4 to Native Dancer through his son Raise A Native and his daughter Exclusive Dancer. This is interesting as Raise A Native sired Exclusive Native to the cover of Exclusive Dancer's dam Exclusive. Also, the paternal half-siblings Raise A Native and Exclusive Dancer possessed dams returning Fair Play to Native Dancer, whose damsire Discovery had Fair Play as his grandsire and the Gallopade line that Panoply likes so much as his female line. Anyway, this inbreeding to Native Dancer was very important to the next link in the chain of breedings that led to Bellamy Road . For Rub Al Khali was bred to a stallion named Cozzene to produce Bellamy Road 's granddam Ten Cents A Turn. An excellent grass horse who finished second in the 11f Man O' War (GI) and United Nations (GI) Handicaps at 3 and first in the Breeder's Cup Mile at 4, Cozzene took after his white sire Caro in appearance and may be accounted the masterpiece of John Nerud's semi-autumnal years save for the great Fappiano (note well that Nerud was also the mind behind the creation of Concerto's damsire In Reality). In his stallion career Cozzene has shown consistent excellence and his AEI/CI of 2.56/1.79 is hard to beat. He has doubtless been aided in achieving this impressive figure by siring Twelve Millionaires from only 16 Crops of Racing Age so far. Cozzene seems to have quite a thing for Ribot as the BC Classic (GI) Winner Alphabet Soup, the Malibu S (GI) Winner Mizzen Mast, the Eclipse S (GB-GI) Winner Environment Friend, and the Breeder's Cup Turf (GI) Winner Tikkanen all are by Cozzene and have Ribot within the first 3 generations of the dam's pedigree. But more relevant to the pedigree of Bellamy Road 's 2nd dam Ten Cents A Turn is that Cozzene traced back in the female family of the Great 19th Century American Taproot Maggie B. B. through his 4th dam Portage . For this reason Ten Cents A Turn is 4x5 to Raise You and Portage, two mares sharing Case Ace, Man O' War, and either Whisk Broom II or his full sister Afternoon. Also, Ten Cents A Turn was 5x5 to Count Fleet through Cozzene's damsire Prince John and Mr Prospector's 2nd dam Sequence and 5x5 to Nasrullah through Grey Sovereign and Nashua . A very nice thing about the Count Fleet linebreeding is that the Count had a shot of Domino's full sister Correction coming through his damsire Haste. This is interesting both because Correction is the 8th dam of the triple Crown Winner Affirmed (who was sired by Exclusive Dancer's half brother Exclusive Native) and because Count Fleet's damsire Haste actually combined a sire tracing back to Maggie B. B. with a dam tracing back to Gallopade through Correction. The female family combination of Haste could thus be recapitulated by the combination of Ten Cents A Shine (who already has a Maggie B. B. line coming through the direct female line of her sire Cozzene) with a recent stallion tracing back to the Gallopade Female Family. This was accomplished when Ten Cents A Turn's daughter Hurry Home Hillary was bred to a stallion named Concerto to produce Bellamy Road as the sire of Concerto was Chief's Crown, yet another descendant of the Gallopade family. Thus Bellamy Road is 2x3 to Chief's Crown and Cozzene, respectively a descendant of Gallopade and a descendant of Maggie B. B. This recapitulates Haste, who was by Maintenant and out of Miss Malaprop, respectively a descendant of Maggie B. B. and a descendant of Gallopade. This matters as Ten Cents A Shine was bred to the 1983 Preakness (GI) and Haskell (GI) Winner Deputed Testamony to produce Bellamy Road's dam Hurry Home Hilary and Deputed Testamony returned Ten Cents A Shine her 5x5 to Count Fleet with a nice close up shot of him through his sire Traffic Cop (who was from a Count Fleet mare). Thus Hurry Home Hillary was 4x6x6 to Count Fleet, whose damsire was of course Haste. Traffic Cop also traced in the direct female line to Fairy Gold (9-e), a very important broodmare inbred 3x4 in Hurry Home Hillary's 7th dam Good Example. And it also should be noted that Traffic Cop's sire Traffic Judge was out of a mare by Discovery, who was also the damsire of Native Dancer, to whom Hurry Home Hilary's granddam Rub Al Khali was inbred 3x4 (Hurry Home Hillary was thus 5x7x8 to the stout Gallopade line stallion Discovery through Traffic Judge and Native Dancer). |

|

![]() This made the obscure son of Traffic Judge a 'Triple Use' ancestor (providing inbreeding to Count Fleet, linebreeding to Discover, and female family reinforcement of Fairy Gold through his female line), and these kind of Multiple Use Ancestors are the best.
Interestingly, Discovery traces in the direct female line to Gallopade and Count Fleet's damsire Haste does as well. Thus Hurry Home Hillary is 5x7x8 to Discovery and 4x6x6 to Count Fleet, and this along with the Good Example's previously discussed affinity for 23-b prepared the way for a return of the Gallopade line. Bellamy Road Perhaps the most important thing that can be said about Bellamy Road's pedigree is simply that the three most intense inbreedings or linebreedings in him are Discovery (to whom he is 6x6x7x8x8x8x9x9), Princequillo (to whom he is 6x6x7x7x8), and Count Fleet (to whom he is 5x7x7x8). If we go by the Degree of Blood, this means that the average expected result for this level of inbreeding is for 5.47% of Bellamy Road's genes to have came from Discovery and 5.08% each from Princequillo and Count Fleet (this puts them at the top of the list for Bellamy and the next two under them are Discovery's grandson Native Dancer and Prince John, a son of Princequillo and a Maternal Grandson of Count Fleet).. Both Discovery and Princequillo were tremendous broodmare sires, Mondo stamina influences, and excellent targets for deep linebreeding (the successful examples of the two techniques being too numerous to list). The first thing that makes Bellamy Road stand out from this large crowd to quite a great degree though is how he is strongly linebred to both Discovery and Princequillo at the same time. And the second (and this is the thing that really makes Bellamy Road stand out) is the related and even profounder point that Bellamy Road's pedigree represents not merely the coexistence of the technique of deep linebreeding with the technique of female family recapitulation, but rather the integration of the two things. You see, the female family of Discovery is the Gallopade (23-b) female family of Chief's Crown and the female family of Princequillo's sire Prince Rose is the Queen Mary (10-a) female family of Bellamy Road's dam Hurry Home Hillary. Thus the mating (Chief's Crown's son Concerto + Hurry Home Hillary) that led to Bellamy Road recapitulated the female families of two horses combined in Bellamy Road through deep linebreeding. It is here worth noting that one of the earlier combiners of Discovery and Princequillo in Bellamy Road is Secretariat, who as previously mentioned sired the Multiple GI Winner General Assembly from Bellamy Road 's 6th dam Exclusive Dancer. General Assembly thus had a sire in Secretariat who was 3x3 to the Queen Mary line stallion Prince Rose and the Gallopade line stallion Discovery, and a dam in Exclusive Dancer who combined these two lines through a 3rd generation cross of Discovery and a direct tail female line of descent to Queen Mary herself. I note this primarily to point out that the combination of the Queen Mary and Gallopade lines in Secretariat has been successfully reinforced in the past. Other examples of this pattern working are provided by the cross between Secretariat and Bellamy Road's female line relative Deputy Minster (who has Queen Mary coming through the female lines of both his sire and dam combined with a 3x5 to the interesting Gallopade stallion Bunty Lawless), as Deputy Minister has combined with 'Sec' in the GIWs Dehere, Well Chosen, Request For Parole, and El Corredor. Since it was the Bold Ruler/Princequillo cross that led to Secretariat forming the female family combo between Queen Mary and Gallopade, it's also well worth noting that Deputy Minister combined 2x3 with Bold Monarch, who was by Bold Ruler and from a Princequillo mare, in the Spinaway (GI) winning filly Cashier's Dream. Also, the very important and powerful technique of cluster breeding is integrated with female family recapitulation in Bellamy Road as well. One way in which this was done has already been discussed (BR's 3x6 to the equivalents In Reality and Exclusive Dancer, who share many ancestors from female lines recombined in Bellamy Road), but another way is through his 4x4 cross of the equivalents Come On (the 2nd dam of Deputed Testamony) and My Dear Girl (the dam of In Reality). Come On was 2x2x3 to Bull Dog, Questionnaire, and Clonaslee; My Dear Girl was 3x3x3 to the same. This makes for a very nice piece of cluster breeding, but there's more at work here as Questionaire was 3x2 to King James and Disguise, who are both excellent female family precapitulaions of Bellamy Road himself. King James's 1 / 1 / 2 combination of his sire Plaudit, dam Unsightly, and damsire Pursebearer foreshadowed Bellamy Road's 2 x 3 / 1 / 1 combination of the Wagtail (21-a) female family of both Deputed Testamony and In Reality with the Queen Mary (10-a) female line of Bellamy Road himself and the Diana (12-b) family of Concerto. And Disguise, a son of Domino tracing back in the female line to Queen Mary, was a foregleam of Bellamy Road's close up combination of the Gallopade (23-b) and Queen Mary (10-a) female lines. Interestingly, Disguise is found 8x9x9x10x10x11x11x11x11x12x12x12x12x13 in Bellamy Road through his 5x7 linebreeding to Somethingroyal (a source of Disguise's son Harmonicon), his 6x6x7x7 to Native Dancer (a source of the Disguise mare Wonder), his 6x7 to Questionnaire (a son of Disguise's daughter Miss Puzzle), his cross of the Argentenian bred Endeavor (who traced in the female line to Disguise's closely inbred daughter Mystify), his sire Concerto's 4x5 inbreeding to Bold Ruler (whose 5th dam was the Disguise mare Cloak), his 12th dam Court Dress (who was by Disguise), and also a cross of Disguise's son Helmet coming through Raise A Native's damline and a cross of Disguise's other son Bulse coming through Intentionally's 2nd damsire Percentage. Thus Disguise comes through 8 distinct sources in Bellamy Road (which is significantly more than usual) and when you add up the inbreeding you get a 'Degree of Blood' value of 7x8x10x13, which sets Disguise as the source of 1.28% of Bellamy Road's genes if the averages held ('It could be more, it could be less'). In contrast, a search to the 12th Generation of his 19 future competitors in the 2005 Kentucky Derby reveals that the 18 who actually have linebreeding to Disguise got an average of about 0.62% of their genes from him (with not one breaking 1%). Perhaps this demonstrates better than anything else just how deeply and perfectly the concepts of linebreeding and female family recapitulation have been integrated in Bellamy Road . The basic theory of pedigree analysis is to integrate the sireside and the damside of the future foal through this and/or that technique (inbreeding, linebreeding, cluster breeding, nicking, etc). But Bellamy Road 's pedigree has taken this to another level as in him the sire and dam are tied together by the same complex of overlapping techniques and patterns that hold together his generations. (Note: Suggested Stains for Bellamy Road are Deputy Minister, French Deputy, Awesome Again, Affirmed, Alydar, Bold Ruckus, Riverman, and Kris S.) |

![]() BR,
Thanks for putting that breeding post up. For some it might be a tough read. For me, very interesting. I have a nice yearling filly, grand dad is Deputy Minister. The mare has My Babu, Bold Reasoning, and Swaps. Her new weanling is by a nice stallion whos sire was Dehere, dam Spinet. This brings the Deputy Minister/Secretariat blood via Dehere, and Spinet is by Nureyev (Northern Dancer) whos dam was Special Key (Key to the Mint/Graustark), her dam sire was Buckpasser. Hope this one runs like she looks. DTS |
