Default Iran

Looks like Imadinnerjacket's people screwed the elections
up pretty nicely. When an opposition leader loses in his own
hometown by a 10 to 1 margin and the overall election is about
2/3 to 1/3...

If you are going to fix an election, this is a very inept way to do it.
I guess the people in charge of working on their nuclear device
will be asked to try and do a better job.

I think Obama's strategy of staying clear of this is the right one.
If we get involved with the more moderate factions it might
swing fully back to the hardliners. The grand leader has actually
said they will investigate, backtracking on his own man. Probably
just trying to buy some time for things to settle down. Nonetheless,
a very interesting view of Iran's politics and their people.

I read one assessment from a middle east expert type that was saying Obama's answer was perfect, for exactly the reason you said about the hardliners - he had to be careful, if he came on too strong it would feed right into Khom. hands regarding outside interference.

Unbelievable, the protests going on. Coordination via twitter. Who would have thought. They'll be back daily, they say.

I'm seeing news reports that are hard to believe, no, it wasn't on The Onion. First, that Ahmadinejad is in Russia. Secondly:

8:38 PM ET -- In a stunning development, Iran's most senior cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri denounced the election results, reports McClatchy Newspapers:

"No one in their right mind can believe" the official results from Friday's contest, Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri said of the landslide victory claimed by Ahmadinejad. Montazeri accused the regime of handling Mousavi's charges of fraud and the massive protests of his backers "in the worst way possible."

"A government not respecting people's vote has no religious or political legitimacy," he declared in comments on his official Web site. "I ask the police and army personals (personnel) not to 'sell their religion,' and beware that receiving orders will not excuse them before God."

ahmadinajed allegedly won the 2 azeri majority provinces in iran.

that would be like mccain winning the black vote in 2008.

By more than his overall margin.
Very sloppy cheating.

the CIA should be figuring out a way to help the moderates topple the hardliners.

Shah Reza ...

"In 1953 the United States played a significant role in orchestrating the overthrow of Iran's popular Prime Minister, Mohammed Massadegh. The Eisenhower Administration believed its actions were justified for strategic reasons; but the coup was clearly a setback for Iran's political development. And it is easy to see now why many Iranians continue to resent this intervention by America in their internal affairs." - Wikipedia ....

No Please.
We stay out of this one.

Know this. Obama wisely has been told by his
people that we dont know who is truly moderate.
The fella you called moderate also has a tumultous history
with the US.

The GOP is going to try and put us in there, though. McCain dissing Obama's perfect response, and Eric Cantor ... it's like they are deliberately trying to screw things up.

so if and when Obama goes back on his word of 'it's their deal', and gets involved forbid with force or even worse resolutions, you, a former Repub is going to blame it on the GOP, who's a far cry from a majority in both the Senate and House?

or is the GOP just gonna try. And if N Korea overshoots their target what will he (Obama) do then and I know it would be very complex.

To those that cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history but we will extend our hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
Sure thing Pres...whateva you say.

So what do you suggest Kev?
We back people that might be as bad as Imadinnerjacket?
We dont know who will be in power right now, its in flux.

We wait.
As we should.
There is no rush here.

Would'nt be prudent.

Meanwhile...
Imadinnerjacket senses trouble:

Even Mr. Ahmadinejad, who has kept a defiant if low profile, made an unusual public concession. After insulting the huge crowds that poured into the street by dismissing them as “dust,” the president issued a statement on state television, according to The Associated Press:

“I only addressed those who made riot, set fires and attacked people. Every single Iranian is valuable. The government is at everyone’s service. We like everyone.”

God this guy is convincing.

Yeah we should worry about what the grand poobah in Iran thinks. Let's not piss them off because they listen soooo well to us now. You know the people there who today said that most of the protesters aren't Iranian but aliens. Or that they are looking to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes. Maybe if Obama, Jimmy Carter and John Kerry close their eyes and chant kumbaya Iran will just go away.
