Too bad really because it was a fun story there for a little while.

Hutt and partners interviewed Ice, and stated this relationship was destine. Now they had communication difficulty, and decided to move to KM. To state they were looking for a trainer who has experience in triple crown races is a stupid statement, considering Ice trained 3 YR Old male horse of the year. I assume there is more to the story, such as Birds move.

It's not like they sold him to Darley or IEAH. They're just using McLaughlin as a trainer because their other trainer passed away. Kirian's not a bad guy. If you liked the horse before, no reason to stop liking him now. |

Does Ice interview poorly or something? Seems to have some bad luck.

He clearly has an issue with communicating with his owners. An operation like Fantasy Lane, with a lot of novice owners in the game for fun, probably need to be handled differently than the deeper pocketed types that just let the trainer do his job.... Probably didn't return VM's for a few of days and that's that.

A couple of weeks/months on the elixir and this guy will be doing all sorts of novel things.

Didn't the doctors who dumped Ice cite "communication" problems as the reason or something like that? I understand there were some other personal issues, too.

Tim Ice
Steve,
What's the deal with this guy? He seemed like a good young trainer that we, as fans, could all get behind and now these stories come up. |

Tim Ice probably has his hands full with John Ed Anthony, who can supply him with quality horses annually if Ice can stay in his good graces.

Hutt seemed to want Ice to train the string more or less without being paid. Tim politefully declined.

As you may note, only 1 horse went to McLaughlin... the stable star. The entire string was being negotiated to go to Ice... Maybe 14 horses? But as it turns out, the rest were left with the former Seewald assistant that Hutt can undoubtedly manipulate.

What is the going rate for services aside from purse winnings?
|

In New York, the day rate probably ranges from about $80 to $125. At a track like Finger Lakes, the day rate is about $50. |

Thanks, Steve that helps.
I guess Hutt offered some "performance based" incentive to McLaughlin in addition to the normal 10%, in lieu of a day rate, and he can afford to take a shot with that on one horse whereas Ice can't, given the still start up nature of his operation. |

Maybe he was telling them something that they didn't want to hear. Like, the horse isn't as good as the owners thing he is.
