Default Youmzain!!!

If any horse in training deserves his own thread...

You all know the many brilliant runs he's had, who he's been 2nd and 3rd to and how many times (exmp. Sea the Stars, Zarkava, Rail Link, Dylan Thomas).

Hope he does well in the Coronation Cup (don't expect him to win and really? Don't care).

Oh and glad he's back to his usual antics. As Mr. Channon likes to say, he's a hooligan.

I couldn't be happier with him. His rather flat run at Meydan wasn't a complete shock to me. There was nothing wrong with him, but then again, there was something not quite right. He just wasn't his usual self. He was easy to get along with and a little bit down in the dumps. Since his return home though, we've seen the Youmzain we all know, love and tolerate. He's been biting and kicking, basically he's been a pest for the last two months - but I'm glad that he's our pest.

He was 4th. Good enough.

Congrats to Fame and Glory.

Full results...

http://horses.sportinglife.com/Full_...365380,00.html

Mick Channon was satisfied with the performance of Youmzain, who travelled well before fading to fourth close home. The trainer said: "He's run his race again. He's a year older and it's getting harder, but I cannot understand why they gave the winner a ten length start.

"Nobody went after him and we were stuck in behind."

Channon mapped out Youmzain’s campaign, highlighting a trip to Saint Cloud (Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud) before the King George and then the Arc.

I know that Daryakana probably wins here but that's okay...

As long as he wins the Arc this year it's all good.

BACK TO REALITY AS YOUMZAIN GOES SO CLOSE YET AGAIN

Just when you think you've got life sussed, it bites you on the arse and reminds you that there's far more frustration than elation in all walks of life.

Many people have written Youmzain off after his runs in Hong Kong, Dubai and to a certain extent the Epsom performance in the Coronation Cup. Yesterday at St. Cloud though, he reaffirmed what we'd been thinking for some time - Youmzain remains a highly talented racehorse, a frustrating one yes, but you'd rather have him on your side for the sheer life challenge he provides both around the yard and on the racecourse.

In yesterday's Grand Prix de St Cloud, a race he won in 2008, Youmzain produced a vintage display. Switched off by Richard Hughes at the back of the 7 runner field, he produced a withering late run when they turned for home only to be denied victory by a nose.

How do you view such a performance?

It's tempting to let disappointment get the better of you, but at the very least, Youmzain has yet again proved he's up for a scrap and keen to race. This is an incredible 7th runner-up placing at the top level in twenty one consecutive Group 1 contests.

We'd obviously like to concentrate on bettering his tally of two wins at the highest level, but at least we know we have him back to his best.

A bit of luck would also be welcomed, but if we have to wait until October for Youmzain's luck, we'll do just that!

Honestly do I have to do everything here?

On the Harbinger thread no one mentioned that Youmzain was 3rd and beat Workforce home.

THE KING GEORGE - YOUMZAIN - 3rd (Again)!

[i]How boring can he be? (Another 100k in the bag, and a long wait for the first weekend in October).

Most of us have been bitten by him - he's a pest. But he's OUR pest.

Harbinger was brilliant, with Cape Blanco coming an admirable second.

'Youmie' came in third due to Harbinger's devastating move on the turn and to say we were beaten is an understatement.

It was simply incredible.

We aren't downhearted though - The future?

Let's get the leaves off the trees, Jaber on edge and the false straight in play at Longchamp, Mick reckons that the tables can still be turned.

"Workforce can't be that bad - he won the Derby by countless lengths and Harbinger did likewise on Saturday. If you look at Snow Fairy's Irish Oaks success, she beat the Ribblesdale fillies by over 40 lengths!

"Coming into the King George, the Irish Derby form gave Cape Blanco no chance and he ran a cracker to beat us, so let's see how the season pans out. This is a jumble of Group 1 form we are talking about and such results are the reason that bookmakers will always do business.

"Longchamp in the Autumn is a long way from Ascot, Epsom or the Curragh in mid-summer and Youmzain is an incredibly popular horse in France for three very good reasons.

"We'll go straight there now for what could be his final public appearance before a probable stud career on the other side of the Channel. Having said that though, if only Jaber and I send mares to him, we aren't ruling out coming back with him as a racehorse in the second half of next season!

'Why not? We don't have the financial backing to buy proper middle distance pedigree horses and £3.6 million tells you that he's certainly the horse of my lifetime - I intend to relish the fact that I see him every day. I hope the wider world appreciates him as much as Jaber and I do as well."

"HARBINGER is a superb horse and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to HH and the Team at Highclere, but we'll be there in Paris!"

News!!!

33/1 FOR THE ARC?

Ante-post betting is notoriously fraught with pitfalls as we saw at the weekend with the career threatening injury to Harbinger.

Scanning through the markets for the Arc this morning, it seems astonishing that YOUMZAIN can be backed at 33/1. This isn't a tipping site, but that seems to be worth a tenner of anyones' money.

Youmzain has appeared at Longchamp on four occasions and he's finished 2nd on four occasions - every time to the Arc winner (name them!).

Mick today issued an update on Youmzain:

"He's in great form and it's just a question of keeping a lid on him until Paris. He's so well in himself that we've even slung him in the Bosphorus Cup at the start of September to keep our options open because I don't want him too fresh. That's probably a mischievous entry though because it's all about the Arc in October, but he's never been to Turkey!

"As the sad loss of Harbinger from the line up tells you, you need to be there on the day and we've been lucky enough to be able to deliver our lad at his peak for three years running now. I couldn't be happier with him."

Yes I saw that.

No disrespect to the final three finishers (well I like them anyway) but he could have destroyed that field wtih one eye closed and going backward, no?

Anyway yes nice that he won and I'm sure Youmzain is happy for him.

YOUMZAIN & MUSIC SHOW VISIT THE SUMMER GROUND

An early lot took the short journey through the village this morning and worked up the summer gallops which are just about perfect after the recent showers. It's all on the Latest Gallops Page.

YOUMZAIN did a decent piece of work in company with Green Army and Mykingdomforahorse and Mick was pleased with what he saw.

"He wasn't scintillating but I'd be worried if he ever was. He just enjoyed himself and today was the beginning really of his Arc build up. He's fit, it's just a question on keeping a lid on him until October when we'll try and get him to Longchamp at his peak once more.

"He's a seven year old entire and knows his routine inside out. The problem is that he's so well we need to do something with him to occupy both mind and body and as his preparation steps up you can see that he knows what's coming. It's a question of us keeping him safe and sound - his well-being is his own biggest problem at times as he can get fresh.

"With him we're wishing time away, which I suppose is a crime at my age. The Arc is such a big deal though that we just want to get there in one piece and at our very best."

MUSIC SHOW did her first piece of faster work since her second place to Goldikova in the Prix Rothschild at the end of July.

"She's a similar story to Youmzain in that there hasn't been a problem all year. She's just been ticking away between her races and all we've done is keep her happy, taking her out and doing light work. She blew a few cobwebs away this morning but nothing dramatic took place. The one thing about her is she's a trainer's dream. She's so easy to work with and has a character to die for.

"The Matron Stakes at Leopardstown is very much on the radar at the start of September and we'll head there all being well. She's been on the go for a long time and I've been very concious of that - but she shown no signs of it and seems in great order."

To view the gallops...

YOUMZAIN TO STAR AHEAD OF LONGCHAMP AS THE FRENCH CAMERAS DESCEND ON WEST ILSLEY

The French Racing Channel arrive at West Ilsley next week to film a programme on Youmzain. It seems rather strange that a horse bred Ireland and trained at West Ilsley should be popular enough to the point that he's to feature in a programme on the other side of the Channel - but there you go.

Mick can be a grouchy old git at times, but such is the subject matter that he's decided to give the French whatever they want. MRC, Hughesie and Youmzain have all set aside time for the camera crew, whilst we hope that they are able to decipher raw Wiltshire, although Mick has no worries on that score.

"I've been polishing up my French especially for their arrival - they've always been able to understand me. I had some easily understood altercations with the French over Yasood and Parasol when they got thrown out of races they won at Longchamp and Deauville respectively, but I suppose I have a lot to be grateful to the French for.

"Youmzain should have been given the Arc against Dylan Thomas - according to their rule book - but shirking away from that decision did us all a favour. Youmie would have been an Arc winner and would probably have been retired to stud a lot sooner.

"OK, I'll come clean - he's not been "off" in the last three Arcs, we gave him an easy time just to get hold of the placed prize-money - it's this year's renewal we really want to win!*

"This lot of French people come in peace next week and they're more than welcome. Anyone willing to give Youmzain credit and who realise what he's achieved is alright by me.

"I just hope their health and safety awareness is up to scratch if they want to film him in his box."
