It's as if B. Wayne Hughes' entire operation is predicated on having unsound horses that run only a handful of times.
From Malibu Moon to all the expensive prospects that debut as 4yos to now collecting unheralded stallions, he has to have one of the most ridiculously unsuccessful plans in the business. Of course, this is not shocking news. I wrote this guy off 2 years ago when he finally had a horse in top form that look to have a bright future (ie Into Mischief) and retired him anyways. The only thing that will surprise me is if Crown Of Thorns isn't on the same plane ride to the farm in Kentucky. As he doesn't appear to be slowing down despite the lack of success, I predict within 5 years he'll emulate the movie producer from "The Godfather", who showed Robert Duvall that 6-figure colt and said "I'm not gonna race him. I'm gonna put him out to stud." I probably shouldn't lose my head over this, though. |

Nothing new here. I knocked Friends Lake in another thread a few minutes ago, too, if you feel your butcher job here hasn't sated your bloodlust. |

The reason Stute trained him, which was really quite an oddity to see Stute train a Hughes owned son of AP Indy, was that he had a rare bone disorder and I believe at the very least, Dick Mandella refused to train the horse. Stute might not even have been 2nd choice. He was brilliant in those two starts though. |
