Artic Fern, one of the top contenders for Sunday's 151st running of the Queen's Plate, will not contest the Canadian classic.

Owned by Gus Schickedanz, Artic Fern, trained by Mike Keogh, suffered an injury on Monday that will prevent him from racing in the Plate.

Is that the horse who broke his maiden first out at Keeneland from the far outside at a decent price? Has he ran since?

SHE has run twice and most recently finished third in the Woodbine Oaks. She's a terrific bet-against in this race.

Am I thinking of the right maiden race then? Terranova had one and I think the Toner Ghostzapper was in that race?

That's it - she won her debut by 13 1/4 with a 99 Beyer. . . Then went to WO and won an allowance by 3 3/4 with a 98. Most recently she was 3rd, beaten 1 1/2 as the 2-5 favorite, in the Woodbine Oaks. She got a 90 for that effort.

Yes, she debuted on Lexington day. Terranova's NJ bred was beaten at nothing to five in her next start in NJ on Memorial Day. Toner's horse was La Cloche, who won the 4th at Belmont yesterday.

Embur's Song won a N1X at Woodbine in her next start but weakened late in the Woodbine Oaks. The likelihood of her wiring the Plate is very slim in my opnion but you can guarantee she'll be well bet.

I would've guessed Giant's Tomb, but he's not even by you-know-who. . . Does the other you-know-who know that, though?

Mobilizer.... Bet him first out at a giant price, ran well. Followed him since and I like him in this spot.

He's one of the horses that gives a hint of being able to run against the grain.

I looked at the charts of the race entrants and was impressed by BRM's last race. It appears that he set a slow pace but he ran everyone but Mobilizer off their feet early. From the chart it appears that Mobilizer put in a decent run. Then I decided to watch the replay: Mobilizer got an absolutely perfect inside suckup trip and just HUNG like a rat. BRM did all the work and Mobilizer still couldn't get by him -- after cutting the corner and coming INSIDE of BMR for the stretch run.

Now, you could argue that BRM will face other pace pressure in the race and Mobilizer will get an even better setup to run into --- like being able to make a late or last run after getting an even better 'escort' into the lane. But there's no way Mobilizer is better than BRM after their performances in the Plate Trail.

Default DRF: Injury keeps Artic Fern from Plate

"He didn't come out of his last work right," said trainer Mike Keogh. "We don't know for sure what the problem is. He X-rayed clean; we think it's something up in his shoulder."

Artic Fern's defection leaves 15 possible starters when the Queen's Plate is drawn here Thursday morning.

Embur’s Song will point for Bison City
(no author listed)

June 29 2010

TORONTO, June 29 - Fares Farm’s Embur’s Song, who suffered her first defeat as the odds-on choice in the Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, on June 13, will now point for the Bison City Stakes here at Woodbine on July 11, rather than this Sunday’s Queen’s Plate.

The $250,000 Bison City, second leg of the Triple Tiara for Canadian-foaled three-year-old fillies, is at one and one-sixteenth miles over Woodbine’s Polytrack.

In the mile and one-eighth Oaks, the Todd Pletcher-trained Embur’s Song, who was making just her third career start, went immediately to the front and led most of the way until caught inside the sixteenth pole by Roan Inish and Moment of Majesty.

Roan Inish is headed towards Sunday’s Queen’s Plate, while Moment of Majesty may also contest the ‘Gallop for the Guineas.'

She owns the sire of Mobilizer and is quite a horsewoman I have heard/read. It would be quite fitting if Attfield a transpanted Brit and now a Canadian if he would recieve the trophy from her majesty for a race named after her. Adds a certain touch of class to the event.

Default CBC To Show Queen's Plate

CBC will televise the Queen's Plate in a special HD presentation from 4:30 pm ET - 6:00 pm ET. Post time for the race is 5:38 pm ET.

Ron MacLean will host the telecast with analyst Jim Bannon. Reporting on the action are Elliotte Friedman, Alison Smith, Sandy Hawley, and Renee Kierans on horseback. The producer is Jeff Pearlman. Dan Loiselle will call the race.

Woodbine Entertainment will once again use the popular "draft" style post-position selection process for the 151st running of the Queen's Plate, North America's oldest continuously run stakes race.

The draft draw, first utilized for the 1998 edition of the Plate, allows the owners and trainers of each runner in the race to choose their horse's post-position.

The draw is at 9:30 am Thursday.
