Default Hollywood cancels Wednesday after downpour erodes track

Hollywood Park canceled its eight-race Wednesday program after a significant downpour in late morning led to erosion in two places on the backstretch.

The decision to cancel races was made at 1:34 p.m., a half-hour after the scheduled start to the program.

To be fair, Belmont canceled 2 days last week b/c of weather. Yes, poly is garbage but cancellations are a fact of life.

This was apparently torrential, wrath of god, cats-and-dogs-living-together kind of rain. Vic Stauffer said water was flowing from the backstretch on to the track in two spots.

I'm sure when it rains 5 times each year it seems really bad.

In my ten years at HP I've never seen it rain anywhere close to as hard. It was a complete deluge for about 45 straight minutes. Here's proof of how bad it was. I have to walk about ten feet outside to a stairway to go from the announcers booth on the 7th floor to the Press Box on the 6th to get lunch. NO SOUP FOR GOOF

It was crazy here in AZ yesterday and today. We had rain all day in Phx with golf ball size hail later in the afternoon. Today in the Flagstaff area, they had four tornadoes touch down. It tossed trains around, along with semi's. This is at 7,000 ft. crazy weather, even for this state.

I heard from a friend who was on the backstretch at HP during the downpour -crazy rain! The track damage occurred at the base of the gap, that's where they take the horses from the barns down onto the track. The barn area is elevated about 10' higher than the track so the walkway (wide as a driveway) slopes down. A lot of the rain that fell on the backside flowed down the gap. Apparently the gap became a torential river and as it flowed onto the track it eroded away the cushion track - kind of like the Grand Canyon

Here's a photo of the surface at Hollywood. It's actually a lot lighter and fuzzier than it looks. Really, it looks fuzzy up close - and yes, that is tire tread in there

Dude, take a pill.

The tire treads are just from the chase vehicles tires wearing out when they were trying to keep up with Zenyatta the other day.

Weak comparison. Calder is a track that is specifically desinged for frequent sudden and hard rains. It's sand. Gonna have to do better than that.
