And Randall, I do enjoy your political posts, but saying you're opposed to universal health care because some people make poor lifestyle choices is a wee bit silly, don't you think? Please explain how childhood leukemia is due to poor lifestyle choices. Or MS. Or Type 1 diabetes. Or breast cancer. Or brain cancer or stomach cancer or most kinds of cancer. Or autism or cerebral palsy or getting hit by a drunk driver or catching pneumonia or falling on an icy street or...
Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes can be fought with better choices by a consumer. I don't have a problem with people on food stamps having to buy more healthy stuff with it. It's not big brother. It's called Universal Healthcare, and those getting food stamps will most likely not be opting out for private healthcare. My question is whether fruit juice is all that more healthy than soda.

If this passes. The reason soda was not excluded before is that the corn industry has a lot of power. Far more than poor people. The corn industry will be the biggest opponent to this because poor people using government money to buy soda makes them money.

While we're on the subject, soda is already ridiculously inexpensive because of the vast subsidies the government gives to corn. So we're all drinking soda already on the taxpayers' dime. And those who don't drink it are subsidizing those who do.

Someone who enjoys my political posts! I thought everyone thought I was the antichrist here?....As for your last paragraph Nicole I agree with you. The problem is there should be a distinction between an illness you get b/c of lifestyle choices and ones you are unlucky to get....People who have never smoked a cigarette can and do get lung cancer. The problem is, 90% or more of the cases are people who got it b/c they chose a habit....

Thank God you are able to see how the soda issue is different b/c it is government money. There is hope around here after all.

Banning schools from selling candy or soda? No problem. Banning people from buying soda with the money they receive from the govt? That's your slippery slope.
Isn't this money supposed to be used to feed people that are hungry? I don't see any hunger being relieved with soda. Conservatives complain about the waste of their money. Well, this is a big waste of money.

Food stamps are to help people of low income buy food (and drink). If you have ever been thirsty on a hot day and chugged down a can of coke I don't see how you (I mean anyone) can possibly say a poor person should not be allowed to have a coke. 20 cokes...bad choice...one or two...go for it.
