![]() I was going over some past performances of triple crown races from the old days and found a very interesting horse in the 1911 Preakness.
![]() The 3-year-old black gelding was listed as being sired by either Hamburg or Sandringham. Hamburg was a great sire - Sandringham was described as "a great roaring brute" and supposedly was a big flop at stud. I can't say I've ever seen a horse with two sires listed before. It would have been cool had he won the Preakness - but The Nigg.er had an unfortunate habit of hanging .. he was in contention and finished 3rd that day. Another odd thing - I never even realized they had a horse track in Jacksonville Florida. I guess in 1911 they did. It's not listed in the track abreviations in the book "Champions" - so no champions ever ran there anyway. After running 3rd in the Preakness in 1911 - this horse later won the Toronto Cup at 10fs in track record time and was called "one of the best horses to ever race in Canada" by the racing press. To the best of my knowledge - no stakes race was ever named to honor this most unique horse. Perhaps if horse racing ever returns to Jacksonville Florida ... that might change. |

I once saw a horse's past performances where the sire was listed as "Unknown sire" - in that instance the horses mare turned up pregnant unexpectedly and they kept the foal - and it happened to race and I believe win a few times. Never seen two sires listed in a form before though. |

There is an old book about Hamburg Place that was stolen from me that was pretty interesting. Seeing Hamburg's name reminds me of how mad I am about that! |

I did a little searching and just found a horse from the late 40's .... ![]() The winner of his most recent race was named 'Dry' (probably a Claiborne horse) Imagine what the race call might have sounded like if Blow Me held on to defeat Dry instead of fading to 7th. |

![]() Here's another interesting one I just caught...
Blow Me is the sire - and Marriage Vow is the dam. ![]() In case anyone is wondering - Steve Leo, Jr. (the horse) rose from maiden claiming ranks to become a solid stakes winning horse who earned almost 100K in the mid 60's. The moral of the story seems to be that if you give a horse a really foul name ... good things will probably happen. |
