Default Bad beats

I’ve got a new one in this category. Not the worst ever but one worth mentioning.

On Sunday at Gulf Stream I put together a simple pick 5 sequence of 1/1/5/3/3 @ $.50 for $22.50 and got the first two Benzel maiden favorites home easily. So now I’m sitting in good shape with 5/3/3 in the last 3 legs and I didn’t really like the favorite in the eighth even though this TAP trainee returning off layoff was one of the five on the ticket. Luckily the four goes gate to wire @ 10 – 1 and now I’m live 3/3 to the last two legs. The first of the two is the Hallandale Stakes and I’ve got the 1, 8 and 10 covered. They come down the stretch, the 8 wins with the 10 third and up comes the inquiry sign. As soon as I saw the head on reply it was obvious that the 8 drifted way out carrying the 10 with him and sure enough they put the 10 in front of the 8 but not in front of the 7 and I don’t finish first and third but second and third. The kicker is that when you watch the reply you see that, if he wasn’t interfered with, the 10 would have out closed both the 7 and the 8. So I ended up with my one choice costing another choice the race and I get knocked out.

Of course one of my three wins the last leg (which I didn’t even watch) and all I get is three $25 4 of 5 consolations. The pick 5 paid $2,500 but mine would have been less since either the 8 or the 10 were more than half the price of the winner so I figure it would have been worth a grand.

Oh well, I guess the racing gods owe me one now.

For the weekend I also had 4 of 5 at GP on Saturday (had the $50 winner but missed Giant Oak) and 5 of 6 in the carry over pick 6 at ADQ on Sunday.

Saturday I spent the day at Wolf Rd OTB, 1pm-5pm. My friend and I split a 6-3-3 pick 3. Normally we dont go this deep, but I hated Battle Of Hastings and he liked Giant Oak. We hit the first 2 with Treaks North a horse I could never have made on anything less then this crazy almost all, we used Giant Oak and the 2 Zitos. Somehow we managed to leave off the chalk in the back end. Mostly because of me, we used the 2 Giant Causeways and the Todd firster. BLAH. Just missed a giant score.

Talk about bad beats...I go to the local OTB to put $2000 on the nose of Giant Oak Saturday. I get up to the teller, and all I can find is $1000 in my pocket. So I put the $1000 on Giant Oak, who was automatic as far as I'm concerned, and obviously, he wins.

On the way home, I find the other $1000 in my coat pocket that I didn't wear into the OTB for some reason. Man, it really could have been something, especially because I picked 8 out of 9 winners at Golden Gate that day.

Not even close to the worse, but yes we did slum. We were going to Albany, but it started to freezing rain so we went there.

There is a such thing as bad beats and really close calls. When people come on and start doing this or start with the redboarding it takes away from the stories.

Yeah, but that's not a bad beat, it's just bad handicapping.

Did you see how well 1 of the Giants Causeways ran, where he finished and what the pick 3 was paying for $1 to him?

Didn't see the race, but the chart said he was 3 wide (if I get a chance I will watch it tonight). No idea what it was paying to him, but I did see what it paid to the odds on favorite.

But my point is, was it really a bad beat? Or was it just bad cappin by leaving off a horse that ran big in his debut and eventually came back and won at 3/5?

I think maybe we should have a contest...

Analyizethis and Kingturf go to the track (with or without Fats charts. That tiny detail is a matter of opinion).

In 30 words or less, what happens?

I just watched the race. Even though I think the winner was a capt obvious horse to use, that would definitely fall into the tough/bad beat category for me.
