Default Bad fall in riding class

Okay, not a fall; I was fracking thrown. Landed right on my back (first time I've landed badly). I'm in some serious pain right now. Suggestions, besides ibuprofin and a heating pad? It took me three minutes to get up from the floor just now (I made the mistake of sitting down on the floor while I ate dinner).

BuffyM, it must be going around... I assume you're recovered from your tumble from Buck? This was Carena who tossed me-- quarter horse, but so hot you'd think she was a TB. Horse behind her spooked, so she spooked, and when that didn't get me off, threw in a heck of a buck for good measure. I got back on and finished the lesson, but I was hurting and now I'm REALLY hurting. Help?

Go see a chiropractor... seriously. I fell like that when I was 9 (on a fence, though) and literally had to see a chiropractor twice a month until I was 16. You never know what kind of damage you could have done.

I hope your back gets to feeling better, Genuine.

Oh God...that must mean that I'm next...

I'm sorry GR. Horses will be horses won't they? LOL.

Where are you hurting? Sore all over or a specific area? After you tell me this, I'll be able to tell you what to do. I've done this enough to know all the tricks.

I used to get thrown all of the time and be fine, but after my serious riding accident, I am sore for about a week now after I get thrown. Of course, now, a horse has to do something majorly crazy for me to fall off, so that when I do get thrown, it is usually pretty bad. I actually haven't gotten thrown in about a year and a half, although, I don't ride nearly as much as I used to.

If you are sore all over, take a very hot bath in bubbles and epsom salts and soak for awhile. Just lie down and rest. Also, tell your husband to give you a massage. You are married aren't you?

If you are older or have had a serious accident like I have before, then you are going to be really stiff and sore. If this is the case, don't worry, you'll be feeling better in a couple of days? Good as new, I promise

If it is sharp pains, I advise you to go see a doctor.

I'm glad you got back on and finished your lesson. Way to go!

And I hope that you feel better

You guys are taking risks for the love of riding. I personally will not get on a horse again.

The bottom line is they are very large, extraordinarily strong animals. If people spent as much time on a horse, as they do in a car, we would see many more horse related injuries, ten-fold compared to cars. Watching my wife ride and going to those shows... there was someone hurt in almost every show (lots of people at these things). Most were minor breaks or concussions, but I did see two helicopters land in fields and Medivac people off to the hospital with severe head injuries. And every single guy or gal my wife took lessons from had a bad back or hip or some other ailment that did not go away and prevented them from riding as extensively as they wanted to.

Rough stuff. A half ton of animal that usually means no harm but really dont understand how powerful they are. I always used to think about these animals having some sort of behavior change like that tiger carrying off one of the Vegas duo by the head. If horses ever decided to act like a mean carnivore, or not trust people around their young and just decided to knock you over and stomp you to death... how easy would that be if they caught you in an open field... I always feel better with a tree somewhere close in a field full of cattle, especially with a bull around.
The ability to climb is good.

Pgardn...

I like the risks associated with horses. Hell, I'm crazy though. I'm as crazy as some of the horses that I ride when it comes to the sport. In fact, in a few years, you might see me riding in races It is my dream. If I die because in a riding accident, I want all of you know ahead of time that I died doing what I loved to do.

Pain is often times associated with dying. I personally am not a big fan of pain. (Just flat out dying is easier). I hope you go quickly. Of course I hope no one gets hurt badly, but if you do get hurt in a fatal manner, hope its quick.

And if you do get hurt and dont die I hope you dont get your teeth knocked out. Apples are difficult to eat with no teeth. I think I have covered all the angles.

It's already been suggested by Cajungator,,,but I cannot emphasize enough about going to a chiro. I've taken a lot of falls over the last 20 years. Some my bad,, some due to the horses I like riding. I like sensitive, forward horses,,,,who are often also spooky and hot. A couple years ago I came off a young horse I was schooling. Landed pretty hard( took out a section of wood fence on my way down! LOL!!), but thought I was okay. Even went to work that afternoon. Weeks later I began having some back pain and sciatic issues. Went to the chiro, got x-rayed,,,,turns out I had a double compression fracture in my lower back. I would seriously suggest going to a chiro. Also, rotate ice and heat where you hurt. Rest and give yourself time to heal. Take mega-doses of Vitamin C. If you feel better in a week or so,,try doing some yoga or pilates type exercises to stretch and strengthen your core muscles. And don't worry about it. Shiat happens when you're riding horses. Its not a question of *if* you're going to come off,,,but a question of *when*, *how much* and *how hard*!!! And it always makes for a great story!!!

Take care,
Suzanne(got quite a few great wreck stories!!!)

That was a confusing post pgardn I had to read it twice.

Just for the record, I didn't mean that dying in a riding accident was my dream. I meant that riding racehorses was my dream. But if I do die, and it is not in my sleep, I would like to die doing what I loved to do such as riding horses. It would be a most fitting end for someone like me who gives their life to these animals.

I don't like getting hurt, but if you ride in the manner that I do, you are going to get seriously injured multiple times. I know this, but horses are definitely worth it and, therefore, I'm not afraid. When you are involved with a sport such as this, you have to face death and pain head on or you won't succeed. There is nothing to fear but fear itself. In no other place is this so true as when you are on the back of a horse.

I've already suffered two near death experiences. But what is near death? How does anyone particularly know what near death is? And now I'm just talking...

I hope I don't get my teeth knocked out either That might would be worse that dying. LOL. I like my smile! Oh well. There are always fake teeth.

Hey, guys; thanks for the advice so far (and the entertaining reading)

I'm up and moving today, but still very sore. I landed on the left side of my back (not on the spine, though) and am very, very tender up and down that side, though I can gently, gently rub it. Basically, anything requiring those muscles to engage hurts--- I can squat as long as I make my legs do ALL of the work getting me down and up, and while it hurts to lift my legs, once I get them propped up (standing behind a couch with my leg propped up on the back of the couch, for example-- only way I could get my socks on) it's only slightly achy-- I'm thinking this is a deep muscle bruise and pull. I don't see any bruising, though, which worries me. Maybe I bruised a kidney?

I slept on a heating pad yesterday (had to, as I was unable to roll over until this morning) and did a cold pack when I was finally able to roll.

Yeah, nothing like those forward, flighty horses to make a girl eat dirt... I requested the same horse for next week's lesson, though-- I've spent so many lessons on pokey guys you have to ride aggressively that I have no skills for the forward ones and that's a whole different game. And while I sucked at the canter after the fall (I got nervous and every time she yanked on the rein it hurt my back), I did manage to sit Carena's trot after the throw without freaking her out, which is progress (she's got a bouncy trot and a tender back- bad combo).

Chiro is a good suggestion; I haven't been to one for several years. I might go back to my acupuncturist though; I'm not sure which I should do. I'm so sore I'm afraid I won't relax enough for the chiro adjustment (I'm very good at relaxing right into it) and I'm not sure I'm out of alignment, anyway. If I am, chiro would be best, but if it's muscular, I think the acupuncturist would be the best way to get the muscles to relax. Agh!

Maybe I should just call my GP... now THERE's a radical idea...

Thanks, everyone! Any additional suggestions are gratefully appreciated!

If you go to the doctor, ask for Biofreeze. It is the BOMB! I love this stuff. You have to get it from a dr., chiro or massage therapist. Lucky for me a woman at the barn is a massage therapist.

Sorry I didn't log on last night Genuine. I hope you are feeling better. Took me a week to be able to ride without pain. Sometimes the walking on the horse helps for sore muscles, but give that a few days before you try it.

Sounds like you landed like I did a week and a half ago. Aleve and Biofreeze is what I did. Time will heal you. Don't be a hypocondriac (however you spell it), but if you feel pain on the inside in a few days then make sure you get into see a doctor.

I believe Vicodin and a glass of wine(use the big glass) will cure just about anything.

You guys are hilarious. I imagine a lot of the pains of life would go away after two Vicodin and a big glass of vino...

Made it into work, but I'm not sure I'll last the whole day...

Yes, they most certainly would... lol.

I'm certain that after tonight, I'm going to need some vicodin myself!

Physical pain might go away. But the pain associated with hallucinations... Jeez mixing stuff. I dont know. I dont like it when I move my head and the view of the room follows slowly behind. When I move my head, I want to see the part of the room I am currently looking at. Not a delayed, blurred view of the room coming back around. Just my preference.

How much do I love my GP? Completely booked, but she's going to squeeze me in at 5PM.

Now, if I can just persuade her acupuncture would be the ideal treatment for this... which it would... though insurance covers chiropractic, too, so that's good.

Good for you! I made the stupid mistake of waiting, thinking it wasn't a big deal. Finally, after several weeks of not being able to sleep very well, I went to the chiro. When he told me my back was fractured, he also said he couldn't believe I was walking around like that and not in excruciating pain. Apparently I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but I really didn't hurt all *that* much. And remember, if the Doc asks if you need something for pain,,,,SAY YES! You can always save it for next time. As anyone who rides a lot knows.....there WILL be a next time!

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for that story! When I broke my knuckle riding, I didn't think it was serious because it didn't hurt much. Thank goodness my brother nagged me into seeing the doctor- I'm not sure I would have gotten full mobility back if I'd continued to ignore it. Just because I'm walking doesn't mean there's not an injury-- you're right; pain tolerance can make one ignore a lot of things. Whatever the Dr. orders, I'll take it.

I just hope she doesn't order a break from riding!
