2011 Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker dead

Pinker Pinker, winner of the 2011 Tatts W. S. Cox Plate (Aus-G1), died on Wednesday after suffering an adverse reaction to a routine sedative injection.

Trainer Greg Eurell was pointing the four-year-old Reset filly to the Queen of Australia Stakes (Aus-G1) on Saturday at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney. She was being prepared for a ten-hour van ride.

“She was just getting her last-minute treatments [before being shipped],” Sara Ashworth, Eurell’s racing manager, told The Australian. “She’s had the same injection 100 times before probably in the last couple of years.”

The filly suddenly collapsed after a needle pricked her skin.

"It's just an anaphylactic reaction, basically. The vet was giving her a needle and that was it,” Ashworth said.

Pinker Pinker, who was produced by Miss Marion, by Success Express, posted six wins, three seconds, and two thirds from 18 career starts and earned $2,687,624. She became just the seventh female to win the Cox Plate, Australia’s weight-for age championship, after she collared New Zealand Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux in deep stretch and shook free to a 1¼-length win.

Ashworth said Eurell was inconsolable about losing Pinker Pinker.

“Everyone around here is in shock and Greg is absolutely devastated and in no fit state to talk to anybody,” she said. "He is not in racing just for racing. He loves his horses. The horses mean a lot to him. He's gutted. It's a very sad stable.”
