Default DVD Pick.......

" Killer Joe" from 2012. William Friedkin ( The Exorcist, French Connection etc.) directs a great ensemble cast, Thomas Haden Church, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Matthew McConaughey (his best performance) as Det. Joe Cooper (Det. and part time contract killer). Emile Hirsh is a drug dealer, who's also in debt to drug dealers who are going to kill him, unless he pays them. So he decides to put a contract out on his evil mother, in order to collect insurance money. I won't give away to much more of the plot, but let's just say complications set in when Killer Joe wants to be paid up, but of course without the insurance money how is that possible. This picture is very funny, very violent, and to some might be very disturbing. It's NC-17 for the violence, language and graphic nudity, just to warn those who may object to any of that. I found it to be brilliantly acted, written, and directed. This was originally a stage play written by a man named Tracy Letts (who slso penned the screenplay), very dark humor abounds, as well as the violence and shocking images, one in particular towards the end of the picture which i will not give away.
Please comment if any of you have seen it already, or if you do it's not for everybody lol. But i think Friedkin (who's just had his memoir published) continues to make interesting pictures, and i think this one is very good. It just was released to Redbox. Thanks.

I agree DJ. She's also pretty fearless, she goes places in this film, most actresses will not touch. When you see it, you'll know what i mean she's brave and talented. Have you seen a picture called "Bound", Gina along with Jennifer Tilly are terrifc in that film? See it if you haven't.

Tracy Letts also wrote "August Osage County" which was one of the best f*cking things I ever saw on Broadway. What was even more awesome about it was seeing it with my husband, who is born and bred Oklahoman. Every time one of the characters made a comment about Oklahoma, I would sneak a peek at him, and see him nodding in agreement. It was really funny. At intermission I asked him how accurate it was and he said, "This would be my family, if my family drank."

That Tracy Letts guy can write a little bit, for sure.

That's funny, sounds like you both enjoyed that evening. I just read "August: Osage County" has been made into a film as well, directed by John Wells. Set for a November release, with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Juliette Lewis. Will be checking that one out, looks like Tracy Letts is making quite a name for himself.

I'm hopeful the film will be as entertaining as the play was. I look forward to seeing it. I think they're casting actors who are a little young for the roles, but hey, it's Hollywood.
