Unless he went to whip, the horse bucked or bolted or something mid-swing, and he completely misfired due to that, it's almost impossible to miss your target by 5 feet (not to mention in FRONT of your body versus behind.) It was a bad decision in the heat of the moment, and will haunt him for the rest of his life. I feel bad for both horse and rider.
