ARCADIA, Calif. - Carlsbad, a winner of seven of 10 career starts and more than $435,000, suffered a fatal injury galloping out at the conclusion of a seven-furlong workout shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday at Santa Anita.

Trainer Jeff Mullins said Carlsbad suffered an open fracture of her right ankle on the clubhouse turn after completing her workout, which was timed in 1:26.80. The 3-year-old Arizona-bred filly was bred and owned by Dennis Weir.

Carlsbad was expected to be favored in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes, a seven-furlong sprint on opening day of the Santa Anita meet Dec. 26. Carlsbad was euthanized on the racetrack by veterinarian Melinda Blue.

Carlsbad won six stakes in her career, including the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks in June and the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo at Del Mar in September. Carlsbad finished second in her most recent start, the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 10. The winner of that race, Informed Decision, went on to win the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
