"VILASOL" INQUIRY
22/02/2011

The Stewards today concluded their inquiry into M Chadwick’s handling of VILASOL in the Sha Tin Handicap which was run at Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Further evidence was today taken from M Chadwick, the rider of VILASOL, and from Mr B K Ng, the trainer of the horse. Evidence was also taken from Mr Joseph Choi Yip Leung and Mr John Lai Ni Nhang, members of the 08/09 Peter Ng Trainer Syndicate, the syndicate which races VILASOL.

Mr Ng advised the Stewards that when entries for this race were taken on Thursday, 10 February 2011, he contacted Jockey Chadwick and stressed to him the requirement that irrespective of which barrier the horse subsequently drew, he must endeavour to obtain cover on the horse as, in Mr Ng’s opinion, VILASOL races best when ridden in this manner. Mr Ng stated that he reiterated the necessity to obtain cover on VILASOL to Jockey Chadwick in the Parade Ring prior to the running of the stated race. Both Mr Choi and Mr Lai provided evidence that Jockey Chadwick had been told by Mr Ng of the requirement to obtain cover on VILASOL.

M Chadwick was found guilty of a breach of Hong Kong Jockey Club Rule of Racing 99 (2) and (5) in that as the rider of VILASOL in the stated race, he did not take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure VILASOL was given a full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible placing in the field.

The charge against M Chadwick was particularised as:-

That from soon after the start until near the 1500 Metres, he did fail to make any reasonable attempt to ride VILASOL in accordance with the explicit riding instructions given to him to obtain cover, when during the relevant section of the race it was both reasonable and permissible for him to have done so.
That by failing to avail himself of the opportunity to obtain cover on VILASOL from soon after the start until near the 1500 Metres in accordance with his explicit instructions, VILASOL was required to race wide and without cover until near the 1000 Metres.
That after obtaining a position one horse off the rail with the lead outside ANTIPASTO near the 1000 Metres, he failed to steady VILASOL and obtain a more advantageous position outside and slightly behind ANTIPASTO when it was both reasonable and permissible for him to have done so, given the fast sectionals run by VILASOL to that point when having to race wide and without cover. Rather he made further use of VILASOL to continue forward to eventually cross ANTIPASTO into the outright lead near the 600 Metres, thereby failing to avail VILASOL of the opportunity of more favourable sectionals.
Jockey Chadwick’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to expire on Monday, 4 April 2011 on which day he may resume race riding (9 Hong Kong racedays ). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting to be conducted on Wednesday, 2 March 2011.

Mr Ng, Mr Choi and Mr Lai were advised that their evidence had been accepted.

Update.....

"We found a piece of bone had come away near the suspensory on Collection's right foreleg and he just needed some time, but he will be back training on the small track this weekend and aimed at the QE II Cup."

"Able One's hip injury has healed, too, and he will join Collection back at the track this weekend with the Champions Mile his goal. The good news is they will get over the injuries they had."
