tim hetherington who directed this really fine documentary on the experience of foot soldiers in afghanistan was killed in libya yesterday. it was nominated for an oscar last year. i heard some criticism of the movie as lacking a political viewpoint which i thought was it's strength. hetherington remained in touch with many of the soldiers he filmed. there's a particularly difficult scene where he filmed the aftermath of the death of a squad leader in combat. i heard an interview today with one of the soldiers who was there. i don't know how to communicate what was said without coming off as overly maudlin but the film is available as a download on netflix. if you have a subscription do yourself a favor and watch it. |
