In Germany, we call the events of Nov. 9, 1989, the “Mauerfall” — the fall of the wall. But the wall didn’t fall; the German people tore it down.

Contrary to popular belief that President Ronald Reagan drove the final nail in the GDR’s coffin with his call upon Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” it was the German people who brought down the already crumbling socialist state in the biggest bloodless revolution in 20th-century Europe.
