9/7: Belmont (Fall Meet Opener)
"America's Ascot" opens this afternoon at Elmont, NY, and with the backdrop of NYRA's victory in the franchise renewal battle, as well as the wake of the fabulous Saratoga Summer, it should be an outstanding meet. Things swing into serious stakes action immediately Saturday with the Man o' War, Garden City and Ruffian, and continue until 36 stakes (11 Gr. I's) are contested in 33 days.
Spa Meet closed out with a flourish, utilizing large scores Saturday (Tobruk, $27.00), Sunday (Mission Approved, $70.00; $173.50 exacta; $1,448.00 tri) and Monday (Tri's 2nd-$135.00 & 7th-$368.00) to end the meet +$700.00 in the personal bankroll. The "Weekend Madness" (SAR 7th Monday) had the opportunity to make everyone's summer with "Most Likely Winner" Classic Neel (5-2) keying a $4,799.00 ($1) Superfecta over Unspoken Word ('B' at 21-1), Lady Digby ('A' at 8-1) and Sans Reward ('#1 Value Play' at 28-1). The season opened tremendously July 25th, but after a subsequent 5 weeks of Selections mediocrity, it felt great to help true believers 'get out' for the meet in the final 72 hours... I know of one "ATR" listener/"DT" reader that had the Labor Day Super, and received many visitors Sunday after Mission Approved stunned the Saranac tripping the offered $1,450 trifecta ($1), and starting a $631.00 P3 (Congrats to pal Martin Lewis who had it 3X). Hope all did well at Saratoga and enjoyed the radio and analysis coverage... It was a particular pleasure for me to bring it to you...
