Eddie Maple
Pleasure to listen to him and get a chance to call/talk with him.
I was introduced to racing from a friend who was a big E. Maple fan . I thought he was from England/Ireland, just from his name, but my friend told me he was a farm boy from Ohio, who was watchable. I became a big fan. Rode first call for Stevens, but was second call for Veitch, Jolley, etc., behind Cordero and Jorge. Think that's how he got the mount on Secretariat. I'm doing this from memory, so forgive the errors. I think he defeated Forego with Foolish Pleasure, Quiet Little Table and maybe Arbees Boy. I don't think any other jockey had that kind of success against Forego... that was in the 'Handicap' division era, when weights were a big thing. Didn't want to bring it up...but think his brother, Sam, passed away??? |
