Champ Sunline close to death; Boundless injured November 14, 2008 11:00pm CHAMPION racehorse Sunline is fighting for her life and stablemate Boundless has chipped a fetlock joint and will not start at Sandown today. Sunline, who was retired in 2003, is having complications following surgery for colic earlier in the year and is suffering from laminitis. Laminitis is a disease where the pedal bones drop through the hoof causing the horse to founder, resulting in severe lameness and death. Boundless's trainer Stephen McKee yesterday revealed his father Trevor would have to make a decision about whether Sunline will be put down. Sunline, 13, was twice Horse Of The Year and considered the greatest middle-distance mare of the modern era. Sunline won 32 of 48 starts including the 1999-2000 Cox Plates and amassed more then $13.3 million in stakes. McKee flew back to Melbourne from NZ on Thursday and realised Boundless had a problem when he inspected her. X-rays yesterday confirmed the bone chip and she will need three to six months rest depending on whether she requires surgery. Last edited by my miss storm cat : 12-21-2008 at 11:20 PM. |
