![]() While reading my Sunday DRF in hand as opposed to online my eyes fell upon a story that begged explanation. The older brother of 2008 Woodbine meet winning jockey Patrick Husbands (Simon) was suspended for a full year for his ride on #2 Bug's Boy in the 3rd race on November 30th placing second on a 14-1 shot by 3/4's of a length. Interestingly his brother Patrick rode the winner #2 Come on Love favored at slightly more than 3/2. Senior steward Richard Grubb had this to say.... "Husbands did not persevere with his mount throughout the race or demonstrate an effort to ensure the best and fastest race of which his mount was capable," read the stewards' ruling, which was released Saturday. Stewards Richard Grubb, Fenton Platts, and Gunnar Lindberg heard testimony from Husbands and trainer John LeBlanc, whose wife, Maggie, and son, Douglas, own Bug's Boy. Robert King, secretary manager of the Jockeys' Benefit Association of Canada, also was present. Since replays are dissected here for not only the action seen but also the INTENT of actions seen and unseen, I am curious if anyone else sees Simon Husbands cause his own horse to check from the jockey's own slight startle midstretch due to the oncoming 3rd place finisher #1 Blu Them Away. Once that happens S. Husbands does not seem to have a chance to win even though he WAS in position to do so prior to the jocks reaction. Does the penalty fit the crime? There are unfortunately too many third and fourth place jocks who don't ride to the wire in this country, thus part of me wants to cheer this ruling as payback for tri's and super's lost from noncompetitive rides but unless there is history here on S Husbands part I didn't see this as horrendously egregious. The second part of the question is to poll you all for the names of jocks you think are most guilty of these rides that are "noncompetitive". Replay available free at CalRacing.com (Nov 30 Race 3) |
