That is a 27 million dollar commitment and I believe the way the salary cap works unless you renounce his rights you still get a cap hit even if you dont pick up the option.
The numbers I quoted were not intended to be Favors actual contract but the minimum he could have received within the scale. Favors, like most high draft picks, received 120% of the scale. That was written poorly.

They are on the hook cap wise for the option years but are only COMMITTED to 8.6 million in actual dollars. Even if the guy is a total stiff (thabeet), they can trade him away simply because he was a recent top five pick if they need cap room.

Remember, the mid level exception is almost 6 million dollars. A top draft pick is relatively cheap labor.

Utah knew that Williams was a goner after next season. They knew they weren't going far in the playoffs with or without him. I think the haul they received was pretty good and certainly much better than they would have gotten if they would have put it out there that he was on the block.
